I think they replaced the VIN...

One time I found a late 1980s Chevy G30 van for sale that I wanted to buy. I took a picture of the VIN plate and ran it through Carfax, and the VIN came back to a late 1990s or early 2000s Chevy Express.

What does it make you think? Stolen, perhaps? Few people know GM vehicles (especially trucks, SUVs, and vans) like me. The van was clearly a 1983-1991 Chevrolet G30 (I believe the sign said it was a 1989 or 1990), and appeared to be in great shape. It even had air-conditioning, which sold me on wanting to buy it, but once that VIN came back to a newer Chevrolet Express I no longer wanted it...

Only 1981 and newer; Prior to 1981, all vehicles used a different VIN type. In 1981, they got the 17-digit VIN. This is why vehicles 1980 and older cannot be run through Carfax and why their VINs won't work on eBay...

There are actually Secret VIN#'s hidden throughout the vehicle, the manufacturer and the police know where they are.

What I'm trying to say is that 1980 and older VINs are pretty useless unless you've got the title. One could put VIN plates and parts from a 1981 Toyota truck in a 1978 and pass it off as the 1981.

What do you think is up with the Chevy van I was looking at?

Think of this scenario, a crook purchases a crashed car with a clean title, steals the exact same model and year car and transfers the VIN Tag and Door Sticker from the crashed one and can then sell it with a clean title.

They would only need the title from the one they purchased as the car they stole will be falsely identified as the crashed one, that is what the scam would be.

I saw some thing on TV about how a car theft ring would steal luxury cars and then pull the VINs from identical cars in junkyards.
