    Herro Folks,

I am due for my 3rd oil change. First one was free by Toyota. Second one, I put in Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic. I have been hearing local that Royal Purple is a better synthetic oil over the Pennzoil. RP is $2 more a quart. With the coupons at Advance Auto Parts, it is pretty affordable.

My question is, should I just continue with Pennzoil or switch to Royal Purple? I am assuming it isn't good to keep changing, eh?

imo, as long as you're using a quality, name brand oil, you'll be fine. Marketing is a wonderful thing and gets people to spends lots of unnecessary dollars :) Personally, I grab Mobil 1 when its on sale for like 28-30 bux for the 6qts/filter.

X2 change it regularly too I use Quaker State Horsepower Full Synthetic 5qts.=$19.00 at Walmart,RP is over priced hype with a cool name,Ive used Amsoil products as well unless your going for super long OCIs I dont see the cost effectiveness or any performance benefits from it compared to locally bought Mobil1 or Pennz Platinum personally.

I agree 100%. but if you wanna splurge. Castrol Edge claims to be better than RP I used their oil my last oil change. Can't really tell a diffrence but I did notice a smoother start up right after I changed it. I'll go back to Mobil when the time comes. I just wanted to check it out know what I mean. Oh one more thing regardless of what the oil companies say I will always change my oil at 3500 mi.

Royal Purples benfits come from it not breaking down until much higher temps, same as Amsoil... which under normal driving is never needed. Another thing ill say from the viewpoint of someone that works at Autozone, some of the oil sits on the shelves much longer than others. Quaker state is prolly the least sold oil in every store i have worked at, synthetics sell slower also but less it kept on hand so we get fresh shipments often

Thats probably why QS is alittle cheaper at Walmart than others,I think most Dino and over the counter Syns will perform well in the uses that most of us use them unless your Rock climbing or a Baja Racer or a serious offroader. While on this subject anyone hear of a Synthetic called Eneos? They make gear oil and I seen some 75W90 at a good price,I use Mobil1 now was wondering if its good as or better I definetly like Mobil1 Gear oils over Amsoil whatever the science is its easy to get locally(no Shipping$$$),cost less and seems to work well for 30K OCI.

Dont know alot about Eneos except that it is in the tuner mags alot, id say 90% of the time standard Mobil 1 or any name brand Oil will handle anything u can throw at it with regular changes

From what I've read is RP is no better than M1 or PP.

PU might be better than RP as it has a really stout addy pack.

Amsoil and Redline synth's might be 'better' because they have a higher PAO ratio, but service life is still limited by the addy pack. Amsoil didn't go as long as M1 in a real-life test because the addy pack fapped out.

But... the purple color looks real nice goin' in!

I think Eneos is a Gp V oil...or esther based. That makes it very expensive.

The new GP III+ oils are so good that I'm not sure they really think using GP V is all that beneficial related to the cost so it's mostly a marketing thing to use it since GP V will dissolve additives and mixed with GP IV you can claim "100% true synthetic" or some such.

There have been some discussions over on BITOG about this...

painted door handles, bilstein 5100's front and back, K&N air filter. Precision power component speakers and Kenwood deck.
RP came to our Energy plant and did a demonstration on some metal ball bearings. We used M1 in our shop. Needless to say the RP scarred less and handled 4 times more weight on the mechanical bearings. I watched it myself and convinced at least in that test RP seems to be legit. I will try it in my truck.

Ive seen RP at numerous Auto Stores when I look at getting some oil lets say its way out of the price range I want to spend,if it works for you thats cool I just dont like to pay $7-$8 a quart when I can get Quaker State Q Horsepower at WallyWorld for $3.80,the Scientific differences I cant comment on but my trucks got 130K miles using it everythings hunky dory, did my 6K today that shit was black as Hell!

    Define "better"?

All quality brand bame oils protect well. They have slight differences in formulation which lead to slight differences in use in different engines.

Royal Purple will get you 250,000 out of your Toyota engines, if not more, the same as any other oil. However, so will Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc.

FWIW, I run Royal Purple in both my Toyotas. But that doesn't mean it's miles ahead of anyone else. And yes, it is a bit more expensive.

I went with the same as last time, the Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic... Instead of the FRAM, I went with a Purolator One instead.

you do know Mobil 1 is not even top tier anymore since they changed their formula right?

as far as what oil to use, the brand imo is not as important as to keeping on top of it and changing oil/filter often depending on how you drive/conditions etc.
