Replacing leaf spring bushings

I swore that I would just ignore the clunks and dunks but I just can't any longer. I ordered a set, which leads to my questions.
What is the easiest way to do this:
Drop the axle and remove the whole spring?
Will they arch once they are unloaded and unbolted making it difficult to get back on?
Can I support the axle and spring and do one end at a time to avoid dropping the axle?

 

Do one side at a time. Remove leafs from truck. Easy work.

 

i'd do one end at a time.. unbolt one spring end while the jack compensates, raise jack till bushing is unobstructed..

I assume you are talking about Poly bushing. OEM sounds like a PITA to dig them out.

 

Removing OEM, replacing with Energy Poly. I'm sure it will be fun. Figure I will drill out the rubber and let the air chisle eat.

 

Easier to burn em out with mapp gas or oxy/acetylene

 

I got to mine without taking the whole packs out. Was easy enough.
A bushing press helps to get the old ones out. And a pry bar to get the pack down enough to get at the bushings.

Got a trick for you on removing the OEM bushings. Use a 1/4" drill bit and drill into the busing right up against the shell. Then put the drill in reverse and it will go around the outside of the bushing and walk the bushing right out of the shell. Make sure the bit you use is at least as long as the bushing. Works like a charm.

 

If you have an auto zone or whatever close.
I did the free rental on a ball joint press.
And impact gun.

 

Says they are only effective if used in conjunction with greaseble bushings?

 

Most if not all poly bushings require grease.

 

We here in Pennsylvania are in the midst of something called winter. I will be working in a closed shop, not really into suffocating myself lol.

Yeah, it creates alot of smoke. Still easier to remove bushings off the truck whether you press em or drill em. Fyi, when you replace the shackle bushing, do yourself a favor and just buy new shackles. Those bushings suck

I wouldn't use those on rubber bushings. Over time that little hole will get clogged with rubber from either compression if the bushing swells for any reason or rubbing the bushing as it moves. At least from my experience anyways. No idea if Poly does the same thing but I'd assume it doesn't.

 

@Torspd and I used a huge 3 jaw press

The forward side was easy its one piece steel sleeve bushing. Rear side of the spring has a split type.

Punch those out and ur golden.

For the shackle its easier to buy another from from Toyota.

 

Thank you for all the help on this. I don't think I am doing the shackle at this time. I have too much other work to do. UCA bushings, inner CV boot, extended brake lines.
