    2019 Manual TRD Off Road
I bought a new 2019 TRD Off Road Manual a few months ago. I now have it back at the dealership for the third time. I don’t believe they’ve done anything to investigate besides running it through the gears and discussing.

About 20x now I have come to a stop light or other similar circumstance and it won’t let me into first. Most of the time I am coming back to neutral. It will let me into every other gear. No matter time span or pressure, it won’t go into first until I cycle the clutch once or more.

Today the dealership called, said they spoke with a Toyota Specialist, stating that the truck is just “over-engineered and protecting itself” and that it seems to be normal operation. I have driven manuals my whole adult life...I’ve never had one do this. I don’t want to come out of warranty with something that’s going to haunt me. Any input is much, much appreciated!!

    Thanks in advance

does it seem to relate to warming? does it get worse after long drives?

Mine does this occasionally. I try to engage first and it acts like i can only move the shifter halfway into first and it won’t let you go any further.

I’ve just gotten used to swinging back to neutral and then pushing it back into first.

It only happens like once a week, averaging 1400 miles.

Mine does occasionally as well for close to 60K miles now. One way to "fix" it is to shift in second and then without releasing clutch shift back to 1st.

It’s been across the board...no real particular time or circumstance...sometimes right at start up and sometimes after a longer drive (I drive an hour to work and back).

a likely solution would be to try another shifter. like the URD or the Core. i actually could send you my original which is an OE with the URD installed.

This is a common issue with multiple 1st gear syncros. What almost completely kills it is a fluid swap. Either Redline MT-90 or the Ford Motocraft stuff that has a big following also.

In 2nd and up, even though 2nd has triple syncros also, you're typically moving, so they align more naturally.

I did try second gear and back to first and it wasn’t letting me. And I did read carefully through that 2016 thread but wanted to bring it back in case there were any updates or some new insight. I love the truck and I can live with it...but it’s just not normal to me and like I said, I don’t want to come out of warranty and have missed something. Thanks for the quick responses!

This would happen at times with my 99 ranger. Never figured out what was going on. Great truck

I experienced it only a hand full of times after three years of ownership. That’s not normal. Change the fluid and see if it helps.

    It's from having multiple synchros?

I agree with others regarding changing the gearbox fluid. Get the tranny warmed up by driving your truck around and then drain the fluid (overnight is ideal). Then refill with the recommended fluids, Redline/Motorcraft, the following day.

Good luck and let us know if a fluid change solves the occasional 1st gear shifting issue.

I had this happen when new but after a few thousand miles it seems to have gone away.

That is my guess. Too many to get all lined up sometimes, esp at a stop where the shafts aren't turning.

Happens on my first gen Tacoma. Although two totally different trucks, and as a couple others have said it’s a synchro thing inside the transmissions.

For about the first 7000 miles my truck never wanted to go in Reverse, it loosened up after that and rarely ever fights me since.

hell, i even go from R, to 2 to 1. weird, but how ive always done it.

in fact, i go 2nd to R as well
