Scion T10015 radio install

I want to start by apologizing, this is my first how-to write up on Tacomaworld, and I didn’t take photos of everything. If there are any questions, feel free to ask and I will answer them to the best of my abilities.

So I recently decided it was time to bring my truck stereo into the 21st century. I knew I wanted Bluetooth, CD player, and USB/AUX ports; but most of all I wanted an OEM look, which is easier said than done. I had been eying some pioneer double din stereos, but then I stumbled down the path of installing Scion stereos in land cruisers and thought “I could do that!”. I started reading into different features of each Scion stereo, from CD player, to Bluetooth, to preouts for an amplifier. And then I stumbled on the T10015 head unit



The Scion T10015 head unit was available in 2012-2015 Scion Xb, Fr-s, and iQ. It was the optional unit, featuring a CD player, HD radio capabilities, double din with touch screen, Bluetooth and optional add on for navigation... and that’s the reason I picked this unit, it had everything I wanted plus the option for navigation.

I picked up the head unit off eBay for $80. And I picked up the necessary adapters from my dealership.

if you want to do this install, there are some adapters that will be needed

PT546-00120-AD. This is the antenna adapter and is the only 100% necessary adapter to install the radio



PT546-00120-CH. this is the 28 pin to 20 pin adapter, this is necessary if you want to add the Bluetooth microphone for phone operation.



PT546-NU160. This is the Bluetooth microphone.



Now the hard part. In order to install this radio, Cutting of the dash and trimming the stereo bezel is required.

Now I’m not going to go over stereo removal because I feel it has been discussed enough and there are enough videos on YouTube about it

1. Remove the stock mounting brackets from the factory radio. Before installing, one part of the radio bracket needs to be trimmed down to install it on the T10015 radio.



2. install the antenna adapter onto the stereo. It plugs into the radio in 2 different connectors and is pretty self explanatory.

3. Install the 28 pin to 20 pin adapter harness. again, pretty self explanatory cause it will only plug into one connector

4. trim the dash. The T10015 stereo has a wider faceplate than the stock radio, and this is necessary for install. I used a cut off wheel on a 90 degree angle grinder. Take care when doing the drivers side, as you end up cutting through a metal dash clip, causing sparks to fly.



5. install the radio. Make sure after connecting all the connectors, pull the harnesses down toward the airbag Ecu. It’s an incredibly tight fit between the back of the stereo and the hvac box. It is incredibly difficult to start the mounting bolts, I was only able to install the top left and bottom right bolts.



6. Mount the Bluetooth microphone. I mounted mine on the steering column, and ran the wire behind the clock and connected it into the small connector of the 28-20 pin harness.

7. trim the stereo bezel. The stock stereo is 7 inches wide. The T10015 is 7 3/4 inches. You need to remove 3/8 on each side. The top and bottom have enough clearance, so trimming is not necessary on the top and bottom. Make sure to remove the metal clip from the driver side next to the stereo opening.

and there you have it!! Finish assembling the dash and enjoy.



I’m still sorting out USB/AUX adapters for the stereo and will update as soon as I figure those out. I will also update the thread if and when I install navigation.

 

Are these backup camera compatible?

 

yes they are. Another thing I will sort out later and add to the thread if and when I do it

 

If my Pioneer head unit dies, I might go back to a Toyota OEM unit. Do you know of any place I can circumvent state sales tax if I buy an OEM Toyota/Scion head unit? Crutchfield narc'd me out to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for a $325 Pioneer stereo I purchased in March 2018, and I got a bill for the sales tax when I filed my tax return in April 2019. Needless to say, I will not be doing business with Crutchfield in the near future...

Did you buy that Scion radio online or privately?

 

I bought it off eBay. It came from a junkyard in Salt Lake City.

 

Did you have to pay sales tax? My problem isn't paying sales tax; Amazon collects sales tax at the time of the sale, but Crutchfield only reports the purchase to your home state, which results in your home state tacking on interest, and that's what annoys me.

 

I have no clue, probably did. Colorado is pretty shitty about sales tax

 

And this head unit does in fact have built-in Bluetooth, USB, etc? iPod compatible?

 

It does as I said in the first post, it has Bluetooth, and is USB/AUX capable, but I need to sort out the needed adapters for that. It’s also navigation capable if you have the extension module and the gps antenna

 

Let me know if you need any help with the wiring diagram/etc... I can read and decipher wiring diagrams for days, but what holds me up is not having a garage/shop to work on my own stuff.

 

It makes me happy when I see people modernizing older trucks instead of dropping fifty grand on new ones!

 

Thanks Jason! From what I found there are adapters that plug right into the back of the stereo and have like rca outputs for a backup camera. I’m gonna look into it more.

 

Thanks for the write up! I have been looking to update my 99 taco (AM_FM cassette!) and had no idea the Scion unit would fit that well. Still checking options on Amazon & crutchfield since I want navigation and backup camera as well.

Question... Why didn't you just buy a compatible aftermarket DD touchscreen head unit with bluetooth, maps, etc. already included. I read thru the original post and see no benefit (other than maybe the cost) to the Scion head unit especially with all of the trimming required...

 

I am intrigued with this idea, except for the added cost of navigation software.
