Here here, OP! I can attest to this personally.

Though the stock Wrangler tires (and stock suspension) aren't anything special, they've done the job in a number of different circumstances.

I've had them in snow, along forest service roads, in loose sand, 3-4 feet of standing water, and along some fairly steep grades of rock/dirt/boulders. With the right tire pressure, I was honestly surprised at how well the truck has performed. That said, I will be looking to change them out for something a bit more capable this coming year, in terms of design and compound.

As far as the stock size of 265/70/16, none of what I've been through has held me back. There have been a few instances where added height would have helped lessen skid plate impacts, and a few points where I've hit my pinch welds coming down off some obstacles, but the size has been great overall. As this is my only vehicle (and hence my daily driver), I'm hard-pressed to change something that isn't broken.

Down the road, could I cut the truck up and convert it into something far and above more capable? For sure, as I don't intend on selling it. In the near future, however, it should perform great for my needs, both on and off road.

Of course you will get the “hey bro.....you gotta do the exact same bro mods as us bro...or you are not our bro, bro......so get yourself some kBros, bro!!” opinions here, but you gotta stay strong and follow your own vision.

One thing is for certain, you get to enjoy the torque from a smaller diameter tire, while the bros save up for a regear.

 

I was actually talking about the tire/rim width. I meant that it’s probably not ok from a safety standpoint having tires that narrow on wheels that wide.

 

You should head down to East LA with a copy of the motor vehicle regs and start making some citizens arrests! My buddy Hugo wants to hear all about it.

Can 31s for without a lift? I need new tire, but I was going to wait until my lift is install a few months from now

 

In my case they fit with no lift, no rubbing. I have a small lift now, but ran this tire size previous to the lift without any issues. I have the stock mud flaps.

Some guys here seem to get rubbing with this size, but generally it is because they are running aftermarket wheels with a lot of offset (poke).

 

I am going to use my new 0 offset rims. Will it work?

I would like to get tires that will work with a 2 inch lift and my new wheels. if I can’t get 33s without a CAb mount cut, I don’t even want 33s.

I am not out there wheeling just driving on washboards/desert roads and trails.

 

I have the 4Runner rims, which I think are also zero offset. They are the rims I’ve run since I went “one up” in tire size. They’ve never posed any problems.

 

You should retitle your thread to read "31& a half and Done" or "31.61 & Done". Haha.
All jokes aside I'm also running 31s (265/75/16), happy with the setup but alway tempted to go up to 285s like you.

 

I was setting a trap for myself for sure, but I stand by my reasoning that a 31.6” tire is no more a 32” tire than saying you ‘drank a dozen beer’ means you drank 9 or 10.

In the very important stuff in life, you always round down.

265/75 or 265/70 look great on the DCSB and AC. But on the DCLB they still look a little small to me, but are fully functional for my purposes. I would like a bigger tire to match proportions a bit, but it is a lot of work for looks.

I don’t think so. Maybe at 3-4”. Bigger tires always will look better and no doubt when I park next to a Taco on 33”s I’m jealous of the stance. I just gotta keep in mind my actual uses for this truck, and the trade offs, and compromises that fit those uses.

My truck does great off road in the stuff I ask it to tackle. I don’t think another 1” of ground clearance is going to justify 33” tires to me, but for sure they look more burly.

 

You could say the same about 35s, 37s, 40s, etc. Then comes the point when 99% of the enthusiasts on TW realize that we spend greater than 95% of the time driving on pavement and any bone stock Taco could handle 4.7% of the rest.

 

Yes. It’s never ending. Slowly work you way up to 42”s then sell it for peanuts because you want to be rid of it.

 

Right on. We all want framed, solid axle crawlers to DD fully locked while getting 23mpg. There's compromise in there somewhere.
