Gas Mileage.

I POSTED THIS IN THE NEW MEMBERS FORUM BUT THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE IT A TRY HERE AS WELL....Hi All, I Just Purchased A New O6 Access Cab With The 4 Cylinder 4x4. I Just Filled My Tank For The First Time And Was Surprised To See That I Only Got 19 Miles To The Gallon. I Was Expecting Mid Twenties While In 2 Wheel Drive. Granted I Am In Mpls And It Has Been 0-25 All Week With Some Extra Idling Time, Etc...any Thoughts?

 

mine goes 24mpg. i have an '05 taco dbl cab. oh and welcome to TW

 

Do you have the 4 as well? Maybe its the cold temps and the break in period??? Oh and I am absolutely in love with my truck!

 

I have the V6 and my first tank of fuel from the dealer or factory "I presume" was 21.6 mpg. Since than I've only purchased premium fuel 91 octane from Shell and I get about 17 to 19 mpg. That is the best I can get. Lately because of the winter condition in my area I've used the 4 wheel drive more often but not full time and only getting about 14 mpg. I talk to the service manager when I brought it in for it's 8000 km oil change, he mentioned that the alternator is the culprit for the weird shifting and poor mileage. Anyone know anything about this?

 

Since your vehicle is a 4x4 with a 4cyl, your engine has to work a little harder to move around the 4000lbs of weight. Having that bulky 4wd differential up front doesn't help either. I would figure since your truck is new and your still breaking it in (takes 1000mi) and the colder weather (most gas companies sell an ethanol blend in the winter) is why you are not seeing better mileage.

 

I have the same truck (Which I am in love with ) and i get around 19-21 in the city! 21 to 25 on the highway. I'm use to 14-15 with my old car so to me this is heaven! You will be very happy with the 4cyl. I just put in a cold air, which will drop my mpg some but it's worth it.

 

my '07 2wd v6 got 19mpg on 1st tank and 19.6mpg on 2nd tank, working on my 3rd now. met a guy a the gas station w/ '06 4wd v6 who said he gets 22mpg as long as he keeps his foot out of it and stays below 75mph. said that his wifes 4runner v8 was getting 25mpg!
if your still at low miles on truck it will come up, also i tend to get better milage out of lower octane gas but this could be just my driving habits. when you make the oil change go to a good synthic (mobil 1, royal purple, lucus) and you should see some increase in mpg.

 

I am very impressed with my mileage. I have '07 4x4 dble cab and have done about 550km on a tank and that is the rocky mountains. My brother bought an '07 Ford F-150 dble cab and he is shocked. His mileage is maybe 400km on a tank. He does not drive it as much. Toyota engineers have done a great job!!!

 

I am at 800 miles now and gonna fill up this weekend and will let you know what my 4 banger is getting. Do the majority of you recommend going to synthetic right away? Thanks for the replies...

 

07 V6 4x4 i can get around 400 KM on 65L ... then the fuel light comes on... the gas gauge is all wacky... but they say it is acceptable.

 

That works out to about 17mpg. What's the traffic like?

 

Second fill with the 4 cylinder was 19.8 mpg with no 4x4 or long idling. 900 miles....Keep hoping for 22-24. Does synthetic really improve gas mileage?

 

expect to get your "final" mpg numbers untill you reach 3000 miles. mine went to 20 on my 3rd tank so we are both heading in the right direction. synthetic oil inmy experance will bump mpg 1-2 but you may not see that increase untill after the 3000 mile mark so doing it early may not get you the extra.

 

I am going to synthetic @ 3000 miles to see how it helps. I am slowly getting into the 22~23 MPG range. I have a PreRunner AccessCab w/ 2.7L and 5spd MT. I am hoping to get upto and above 28 MPG on the highway. My wife's 2006 V6 Sport 4WD Rav4 gets 29-30 MPG on the highway!

 

Any new info? This stuff is old news - about 2 years plus.

 

I use 0W20 synthetic, 2,800 miles and am up to 26 mpg (50/50 Hwy/city avg) with mostly 8 - 10 mile legs on 87 octang. Plan on droping in K&N air filter and hoping for 28+ by 5k miles.

 

My 2006 4x4 does not get good milage when pulling my 16ft boat and carrying the popup camper but it is a delight for fishing and camping experiences

The idea of different oil is interesting. I'll check it out

Dealer sticker for my 07 TRD D-cab Automatic says 19/22mpg but I usually get 17/20mpg.
Last month I visited the high mileage clubs and learned to shut off the motor when cruising to a stop that will last more than 30 seconds. My CITY mileage rose to 20mpg the first week, though it does not work when picking up groceries- stuff melts quick when outside temp is 90+.
Since gas rose above $4/gal I rarely get the tach above 2000rpm, so I was shocked when I started checking the mileage. I must have gotten under 14mpg when I was hitting the trails or towing trailers.
It is hard to believe the mileage is so low with a 5-spd auto - it just doesn't make sense. Though, I imagine Toyota is having a hellish time trying to sell our big brother with the 5.4L V8

 

im thinking of switching to mobil1 0w30 advanced fuel economy. anybody used this?
