Anybody have an ARB Front Air Locker?

Need to compare notes on air locker behavior.

1) Engage 4-lo
2) Turn compressor switch on hear, feel nothing.
3) Turn REAR locker switch on - HEAR compressor for a very short moment while hearing feeling a click.
4) Turn FRONT locker on and hear, feel nothing.
5) Turn all off, return to RWD

Is this NORMAL?

 

I assume you are trying to determine if the front locker is getting air. My suggestion would be to engage both, then turn off the front, turn it back on. Do this several times. Eventually the compressor manifold will need to recharge as the line keeps drawing.

I dont have a front, but for my rear it takes about 4 or 5 cycles to recharge the manifold

 

Yes just checking. It's raining cats and dogs out, if it weren't I would suspend all 4 wheels and test it. The front is silent, but I haven't cycled it as you suggest. It may just be it's so close to the manifold and doesn't move much when engaging. Thanks

 

Lift front of truck off the ground so tires are able to spin . Engage Air locker and you or a helper spin one of the tires . If both spin the same direction your locker is working . If only one tire spins one direction and the other doesn't or spins opposite direction then the locker is not engaging

 

False test. Front locker does not engage unless rear locker switch is on.

So switch on compressor, then rear, then front - the compressor will come on as required. Will lock test tomorrow. Thanks

 

They made the wiring harness default that way. The front will only come on after the rear is engaged unless you modify it.

 

Yep naturally I read the manual that evening which made it quite clear.

 

Slight spin of the front and it engages. I think I can turn my front locker on and off 3 times before the compressor kicks on. The rear is once.

 

Pretty much spot on.

Do you have an air hose/tank/qd etc for tires?

 

I dont run a tank. When I air up with the hose it will just run continuously. Flick the front locker a few times on once the rear is engaged and you will hear it kick on. The tank has enough air to activate the front since that line is the shortest.

 

Does your front locker indicator light come on?

 

Did you get your questions answered? I'm not sure what exactly you're looking to test. Where exactly are you "feeling" for something when you engage the locker? Binding during turn? Tangible clicking or something during engagement?

Like any locking gears you may need to induce by turning and moving the truck a bit. Front diff is smaller so doesn't take as much air from compressor once compressor has engaged and built pressure.

Also, curious, what is your setup that you have to go into 4LO and lock the rear first? Interested because i have an OR and only have front air locker so I can engage whenever I feel like breaking my front end

Yes. I was just wanted to quickly make sure stuff was working when I first got my truck home last Friday. All seems well.

I just used 4Lo in my example because I would be hard pressed to use my front locker in 4Hi! Yes with ARB they make it slightly idiot proof must have rear locked to use front locker.

 

Yeah I was the same way when I did my front locker. If you can get it to bind it will be very obvious if it's locked. Unfortunately the light just means you've told it to push air doesn't mean it worked!

Didn't know ARB made a full kit for both that has extra logic, very cool.

 

Not a lot of logic just the front locker solenoid switch is powered from the rear locker solenoid switch

While on the topic I am not exactly a huge fan of the ARB rocker switches. The don't really fit in the standard 2016+ cubby panel. While lighted and not engaged only a little bluish light and are not readable in the dark. Can read when on though.

 

Sounds like a solenoid failure then. Do you hear it pressurize at all?

 

You could try taking the line from the front locker and connecting it to the rear solenoid. If diff locks then you know it is the solenoid!
