I also keep a role of the "rescue tape". I've never used it yet, but I've heard it mentioned a few times on some off road podcasts.

I don’t think I’m your typical owner / off-roader as my truck is used 90% of the time to get me or me and my boat to my fishing spots. With that, I do have that one special bag. It’s my damnit, I fell in again bag with a full change of clothes so I can be dry and warm again.

    So far:

    jumper cables

a nice heavy breaker bar and socket that fits the wheel lug nuts

a tow strap with lanyard ends in the bed storage box

need to remember to put in my folding saw from the previous vehicle

Lot of good ideas here though, so I think I will be adding some more essentials!

dumb question, but is everything metric on a Toyota? No point in hauling around tools I don't need.

I have been meaning to stash a change of clothes in the truck too. I got absolutely soaked riding my bike last summer, thankfully had a jacket I could wear but driving home with drenched pants was not particularly enjoyable.

    Most likely.

Even one of my prior GM products (2007 Saturn Aura) was metric, so I can't see how there'd be much room for "SAE" bolts on a Toyota of almost any vintage. YMMV.

Here's an interesting fact: the fill port for the ATF is a GInormous 24mm socket, which I didn't have as part of any set in shallow so I had to buy it separately (the deep, "impact" version of the 24mm socket I had wouldn't work -- you need either a ratchet wrench, box wrench or shallow socket.)

Yeah, all the above, camping hammock, camping hammock tarp, underquilt, overquilt, down travel pillow, tooth guard, 12Volt CPAP machine, kindling, sven saw, charcoal/lighter fluid aka Scoutmaster kindling, instant coffee, WATER, jetboil, MRE, warm clothes, synthetic chamois for a towel, THERMOCELL. That which can be compressed is vacuum-sealed to save space. In my life I've spent an unexpected night or two in the woods before. Miserably. I go ready to overnight if I have to, again, or if I just choose to on short notice. If shit goes south, I am going to be comfortable. Guys, you can up your storage container game by using these: https://www.amazon.com/Ziploc-Weath...GD61NWCGH7J&psc=1&refRID=ZTECV9ADAGD61NWCGH7J Excellent seal utilizing a substantial gasket and positive locks. No dust, long-term storage. Can see through and locate before you even pop the top. Great to not have to dig through everything. Add one of these to eliminate no mold/mildew: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=silica+gel+cannister&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

The only intentional off roading is my 250' dirt driveway which in winter-spring varies from compacted snow, to ice, to 6" of mud the consistency of porridge. Gear needed: TRD OR

I do carry some recovery gear including HD (with an emphasis on heavy) V-bar tire chains that are from my Dodge diesel 3/4T/truck camper's LT235/85/16 tires and fit my stock Tacoma tires loosely, but good enough for a short distance, I think.

I have 2 HD plastic cargo boxes affixed to the cargo rails and positioned next to the wheel wells and instead of sand bags, this is where the chains and other heavy stuff reside.
