    That last pic in the OP's post of the 24 hr Fitness w/ escalator is about 10 min from my house in Mission Beach, CA. Stumbled on it when I went to Sports Chalet which is right by there and did a double take hahaha. So yes, very real, very reeeediculous :p

    It is but the perspective makes it look like it's for the 24 hour fitness facility. It's actually a shopping center with other shops on the second level. The 24 Hour Fitness gym just happened to be positioned at the top of the escalators.
