you wanna hear something fucked up?

if i actually earned a doctorate in any subject and then tried to get hired as a high school teacher for that subject... i wouldn't get hired
the school district would most likely pass on me, with the knowledge that i could later demand a higher salary and they'd likely have to pay it

private or high-end chartered? no problem (at a lower salary). public? it's not happening

Ah but there is... you also can’t use the excuse that you’ve already been in charge of 200 shit heads and just want to be a minion now.

@smartbomb what do you teach? Knowing what you know from some of the asshats you had as an NCO, how do you like teaching? Obviously you’ve said you do, but I mean like considering how some kids act. There’s always those couple but I’ve tossed it around. Just not sure I want to deal with helicopter parents, bringing papers home to grade (like I did with awards and NCOERs), and kids that seem to have no discipline. Helped with JROTC as an ROTC instructor and even with the Audie Murphy Club but those are typically a specific type of kid. What’s the norm like in your experience?

That depends, are you an asshole but cheeky and fun, or an asshole that makes interacting with you tragic and sad?

The real question is - is your rock any nicer than the stones we're forced to live under?

If so...scoot over. @Pchop is bringing the fish, and I'll pick up some beer.

I teach 11th and 12th grade English and AP Lit.

in my first year of teaching in public school right now

as for students, people are people. i try to meet them where I find them.
there's always a kid that thinks he's a hard-ass, and some of them have terrible home experiences

my approach? i talk across to them as much as possible and give them as much responsibility and authority as possible

one student this year made a statement to the effect of: I could probably beat you up. My immediate response: that's not important.
    not a problem since.

i also believe in setting a tone.
for instance: i'm not the final arbiter in my classes. each class I have will develop their own rules for that classroom on Day 1.
if they don't all agree on a rule, then it's not a rule. each class is also in charge of enforcing their rules.
it's about ownership of the environment, which includes conduct

i simply help them enforce their own rules.
    the rules for one class:
    don't be a jerk
you're allowed to eat and drink in class
    clean up your mess
    be cool

and it's funny how they enforce them, even outside of class.
one student has a sibling in another one of my classes. who wasn't completing some seriously easy homework
younger sibling: "clean up your mess" no sarcasm.
I could not have been prouder

parents are different. most care, some don't.
one of my best students attends parent-teacher conferences without either parent. they're completely checked-out

    edit:
as for taking home papers to grade, I don't do it. I also avoid giving homework if I can.
I get to the school seriously early (around 4 usually) and I grade work then.
my family isn't awake at 4 am, but they are when I come home. I want to spend time with my family when I can

the assistant principal did express her concern about me being alone in the building that early. her chief concern being my safety
"what happens if someone wants to get in?"

    "i'd let them in, it's a school"
"I mean someone that's not allowed in the school"

    "like a registered sex offender?"
    "exactly"

"I have no idea how to determine if someone is a registered sex offender at a glance ma'am"

"you know what I mean, like if someone is trying to shoot up the school"

"with one person in the building that would be the lamest school attack ever"

that went on for a while, it was pretty funny. especially since I continually call her ma'am when she's about 20 years my junior.
the agreement we struck was pretty rich, the janitor had to let me in before he left. "that way there are two people in the building"

is bullshit though, the janitor is like 65 years old and likes to leave around 11pm. he just assigned me a key
