Norcal Spotted and BS Thread

I probably need to do something like that. She's never been aggressive and she loves other dogs, but she's just not sure about most people.

 

This is a big problem for dogs that spend a long time in a shelter or boarding facility with little or no human contact. As you can see, it can be trained out but it's difficult. Dogs that are perfectly house trained learn to shit in their kennels because they're not taken outside to potty-some even become shit slingers. It is what it is and certainly not what many organizations want to admit-especially those that are no-kill and have say a senior dog or worse, a puppy, for a very long time.

Not trying to be down on rescues, just recognize these can be issues and it takes a lot of effort for these dogs to be good family pets if that's the case.

 

The lady that does the training deals with way more than just aggressive dogs. Basically, you tell her what's going on and she'll make suggestions based on what your wants and needs are. Ours started off scared of other people but we were able to break that by telling other people not to make eye contact at first, to give him treats if he approaches them, and by sitting down upon introduction (he was especially scared of people standing over him at first).

This lady does a 3-4 week training camp. Time depends on the dog. We're done in 3 so I'm assuming most dogs are since we had a few issues we needed help with.

We actually got him from a German Shorthaired Pointer rescue but he was in a shelter before being picked up by them. Unfortunately, the foster family didn't do much to socialize him and therefore wasn't really able to let us know what we were getting into. And I don't so much blame the rescue as I do the foster family. I think that as a foster family, it's your duty to inform the future family what they're getting into. Test his limits, see what he's comfortable with, introduce him to new things. They went to work, came home, and never really left. They had a fenced in back yard and never walked him more than 1/2 mile at a time. They actually told us they would walk across the street if they saw people or other dogs coming their way. This should've been a red flag but we hoped for the best.

Like you said, it is what it is. We're trying our best with him and we want to give him the best life possible. Unfortunately, we weren't able to break his habits but this trainer was able to. He is an overall happier dog who wags his tail much more than he used to.

Who was the trainer you used? My friend runs dog training in Walnut creek, Lafayette and San Rafael. The Tail Haven. Good for boarding, training etc.

 

You should put one of these in the truck, for next time.
