    Hello!

So... I have a 2.7 4cylinder 4x4 and currently running 285/75r16s. I struggle due to it being a 4banger and it has the 6 speed auto. It hunts and barely stays in 6th, etc.

    4.88 or 5.29???

I’m leaning towards 5.29 because it’s again a 4 banger and I have the auto transmission. 5th and 6th gears are overdrive just like the one on the 3.5 v6z.

can anyone chime in their own personal thoughts ? Or if anyone here has my setup and re geared, that would be awesome to hear from you!

    thanks

I’m wondering if the LR tank will give you “Super” taco lean?

Just a little humor, but interested if the tank will cause the truck to lean more and if you have plans to compensate for it.

thanks ! Yeah I’m going to purchase the whole install gear package from nitro. I just spoke to a guy I know who works at 4wheelparts ( yes I know lol) he did an auto 2.7l 3rd gen a little while ago with g2 gears idk what ratio, but he said it changed the guys life. I can only imagine lol.

I’m going to install it at my local fab shop, they build mud trucks and crawlers. Solid reputation.

thank you for replying! Gives me more reassurance!

I know right! Gonna have to see, most likely yes, as I am 6’3 275lb and the gas tank is on the same side of the truck as me, so there you go.
I think this is why I have my gigantic fridge full of goodies on the passenger side.

I have one and the gauge and the miles to empty are off, but for what I wanted it for-extra range it was worth it. On my first tank the gauge was showing full 100 miles after filling up! I run the tank until miles to empty say zero. I need to fill one of my rotopax and see how far I can go beyond zero.

I put a front locker on our truck for extensive sand and extreme mud travel not for rock crawling, starting next year. I’m hoping you are correct and that I don’t need it but I don’t wanna wish that I had had it

How’s the gear noise in the 75-80mph range. Is there anyone with 5.29’s that frequently is up at these speeds? I feel like I’ll be up in this range quite often.

should I be concerned about extra gear wear or reduced life running these gears up to these speeds frequently or maybe just change diff oils more often?

some might be thinking why drive that fast, but where I live, at 75 people are constantly whizzing by. And the flow of traffic is often times up in the 80mph range. I don’t mind slowing down a bit tho and keeping her at 70-75.

Ha! I don’t think mine will get that high. But there’s nothing but silence up to 73 or so

So why not just get 4.88 gears? Not trying to push you in either direction, but check the chart at those speeds: http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

I want the extra power for towing my travel trailer. 2550ish rpm at 80 doesn’t seem too bad to me. As long as the gears don’t mind spinning at those speeds.

Well, I don't want to curse myself, but I don't understand all this hoo-ha about gear noise. I accept that it's a "thing" since so many claim it.

I've geared every truck and Jeep I've owned, and never once had a whine/howl.

To answer your question specifically, I commute at all speeds between city and hiway, including the speeds you mentioned and haven't had an issue.

Lastly, I've never seen any literature stating a shorter lifespan due to speed (talking about the gears).

are a lot of you running OVtune with 5.29’s? How does the stock Toyota tuning/shift points react with 5.29’s. From stop to get up with little pedal, Does the truck seem to hold gears longer than stock gears or does it seem to shift through them much faster than stock gears?

I’m also curious if anyone knows if there’s a mod to change the default S mode gear from 4th to 5th. This seems like it could be helpful for this gear set. Maybe in Techstream?

I'm really sorry to bring this back up, but I just re read through the entire thread after page 43 and didn't see much more talked about this. Are there others that are being throttled in 6th gear at around 88mph (great scott) with 5.29's on 33's ? is this just a thing with Ovtuned trucks or stock trucks as well? I doubt many trucks have even been up to this speeds with 5.29's and 33's like this truck so maybe its just unknown. Anyhow I was curious if there were any others experiencing this and if you're ovtuned or stock tuned and your truck's year and tire size etc.

Well, I have 34's and don't have a clue what OVTune is. I haven't ever hit a limiter in this truck before or after gearing. I've never paid attention to my top speed, but next time I'm on the freeway, I'll test my curiosity.

Question: why/where do you need to go that fast?

I don’t “think” I’ll ever go that fast. I have hit 90 and not realized it once in this truck coming down a long grade. I would think 85 would pretty much be my absolute top speed limit once I install tires and lift. Just seems like some useful information to know.

I’m currently getting my gears upgraded to the 5.29s and he told me I have way too much crap that came with the nitro kit and to try to send most of it back. He said because my truck only has 8000 miles most of the extraneous stuff I don’t need. I also brought new oem Toyota seals which, he said I don’t need either because the truck is so new. Can anyone backup his thought process? He does warranty his work for 3 months.

Ya this is common, trucks with less than 10k don’t typically need the master install kits
