A local SoCal trail out at the Otay Reservoir. Nothing too crazy Or technical but enough to sling some mud and have a good time. Seasucker mounts on the cab and rocky mounts on the bed track.

I rode my bike out in Eagle Mountain last night. I still have brain freeze! Still working on this layers thing. I was too hot on the up, then got smacked by the yeti on the way down.

Totally hear that. That’s why I mentioned that Moab is worth it even if you don’t get the enchilada. So many great things to do and see that even going and getting zero ride time is going to be amazing.
Burro pass won’t open till mid June (I think) due to land use agreements. Just call the local shuttles and they’ll fill you in. Spring opening also depends heavily on snowfall. Some years they’re ready to open as soon as they’re allowed, some years they have to wait till it melts. Burro Pass is at over 11k, and you’re descending to 4K. Lots of technical climbing too.
September is the better bet, but no guarantee it won’t snow at the upper elevations... Again, still so many amazing rides there you won’t be shorted. Ahab, Mag 7, Porcupine, Bartlett, Klondo, etc.. And the hiking is crazy beautiful too.

    Okay... rack showed up today.
    Ordered with the 2in bolts.
It has the same braces for flush, just different bolts.
My question, at the moment, is what size hardware from the 80/20 to the braces?
I need 5/16 for my slots, and the 3/8 are JUST too big. And since I supposedly have the only voodoo rack in history without rust, I am hesitant to make more room for larger hardware.

Edit. BTW, this thing is beautiful.... simple, effective. Will make dragging the bike into the room while on the road, a breeze.

Unless there is a huge snowpack that lingers into summer....didn't TWE take until August to melt out this year?

I've always had great conditions the second half of September. Temps have cooled off a bit down low, less risk of thunderstorms, aspens are turning, and its before the first winter storms usually hit. I've also gone later in Oct/Nov and been skunked up high by a storm that blew through days or a week before our trip. We often combine Moab with some high elevation riding in Durango area. I've been wanting to go in July or August to get more wildflowers in CO. It will be hot in Moab then, but if you start TWE mid-day or afternoon and finish around sunset it isn't bad. We do that sometimes for Cannell and other rides that start up high and finish low. You'd be more limited in what you could ride around Moab, but there is plenty to explore up high as well.

Weather in May is usually nice, but you're almost guaranteed anything above Kokopelli won't be open. September can have storms but it's usually nice then. That's when I'd plan to go. If you're going to spend $1k on the trip I'd do whatever you can to extend it to a week or 10 days to make it more worth it. There is a ton of good riding in Moab and within a 2-3 hour drive. This also provides you with flexibility. If a storm comes through you might be able to schedule TWE later in the trip after it dries up. Or if its really bad you could re-locate from Moab entirely. There's usually something within half a days drive that's riding well.

I hear you on flexibility though - that's why I'd much rather drive for bike trips. There have been many trips where I've had to change destinations due to fires, smoke, or storms. Options are more limited if you're flying, and very limited if you've only got 2-3 days. Would trip cancellation insurance cover it if you had to bail due to weather?

Agreed. 10 days and you’d be wishing you had way more time. It is a special place...

Trying to find 7-10 days off work for a vacation when I already take ~45 days off every year for Army Reserve "stuff" is next to impossible, so the 2-4 day limit per bucket list item is just my reality. I have a buddy living out there, so that helps with planning and provides some flex, but I really do need to time it right. lol

Seriously, though, thank you to everyone for the great advice. I -will- ride the full TWE someday soon...just gotta solve the puzzle.

Those pictures depress/annoy me. Why ruin perfectly serene woods with a bunch of unnecessary pavement that can't even be used for more than one activity?

DJ bikes are usually 26ers. Run tires that basically have the knobs clipped off. Some are more like traditional mtb tires, and some are a little more funky.

@abacall is the king of TWE. How dare you challenge his reign!?!

Oh, and the trail manager for Corner Canyon said she would print me out a "King of CC" certificate just to spite you...foreigner :D

The bmx kid in me would be thrilled, but the older and allegedly wiser naturalist in me would be very much annoyed by the completely unnecessary pavement ruining the scenic natural trees+dirt surroundings. Just being honest.

Did I mention that I hate most pavement, regardless of location? I guess I'm getting all granola in my old age... :notsure:

If you ride the south side of PCMR in Park City you pop out at the top of the hill in old town. You then get to "hot dog" your way down main street, and it's a highlight of my day! Then pedal back up for a ice cream cone at Java Cow then bomb it again!

Man, last year on that trail, on the porcupine ledgy AF section, I though I was all killing it... Then a dude in cutoff jeans, skate lid, and a hardtail, just boosted over a section I was all slowly rolling. Just boosted.
So, that was me remembering I actually kinda suck at this...
