75w-85 or is 90 ok?

I see people on youtube using

$28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 on their front and rear diffs but it recommends 75w-85....thoughts? Seems like the 90 is much cheaper and easier to find than the 85 version.

How do you like the Ravenol 75? Any noticeable difference?

 

That ravenol is the shit man. I'm a huge fan.

 

I did 75w-85 ravenol for front and back, toyota super special golden 75w fluid for the transfercase.

 

I replaced the transfer case fluid at 30k miles and while obviously I didn't send it out for an oil analysis or anything like that i think I could have waited until 60k before changing it

But anyway with that being said I haven't noticed a difference so far, engages in 4hi and 4lo without any issues just like before.

I'm glad I didnt because my dumbass forgot the crush washer on the drain bolt and didnt realize it until I torqued it down. I'm OCD so hell yeah I drained that shit out and replaced it. It sucks because you have to buy 2 bottles (it takes a full bottle and a tiny bit of the other so I just dumped the rest of the 2nd one) i think they were only $18 each but I would have shit my pants if I had to shell out $300 ($75 each for the Toyota OEM stuff x4)

 

Yea my wife's GX also uses the fluid and my dealer sold it to me for $50 per so I went with what the book calls for, especially because she has a center diff, not a transfer case. There is a virgin oil analysis of the Toyota fluid floating around somewhere and there is no other equivalent fluid

You only need 1 bottle of the Toyota fluid for our transfer case. Our transfer cases call for 1.1 QUARTS of fluid. Toyota sells the golden fluid in 1 L cans. 1 L is 1.05669 QUARTS.

 

I thought the ravenol was like insanely close.

 

I guess it depends on your definition of insanely close, for me it wasn't when I looked at it.

Just a FYI...
Redline now has a fluid listed as an LF substitute; MT-LV. I have yet to see a VOA on it to compare.

Just so we're all on the same page, the issue is not the oil viscosity (weight), it's the additives that are a concern. The toyota fluid has a different mixture of chemicals / metals / additives than anything that's been available so far. (I'm about to go check redline's site again, given what splitbolt said).

October I started running the Red Line 75/110 in front and rear diffs and haven’t seen a loss in mpg’s. Also have the 70/75 in transfer case and there’s been no issues with engagement/disengagement smooth and quiet. where I live I’ve had ambient temps 20-85*, even on the coldest day I checked engagement/disengagement immediately on start up( no warm up time) and it was fine. I haven’t physically seen a voa on the 70/75 fluid either, but according to Dave at Red Line compared to the OEM fluid it is as good or better.

 

You’d be fine with the 1L Ravenol bottle. The TC calls for 1.1Qt which is 1.056L. I’m sure 1/25th of a Qt stays in the case.
