The possibility of crap/sediment is real. There were a couple of gas stations here, owned by the same guy, who had a contact with the city for fuel. This guy never changed the filters on the pumps themselves.
City police, fire, ambulances, all started having issues with vehicles and it was traced back to the gas station. From what I heard, it was bad.
Put the guy out of business.

Why would it pick up sediment only when it was dry? After all the filter is on the bottom.

 

OP: Have you crawled underneath to see if there's any sort of damage to the tank? Say a big dent that might have occurred if someone were wheeling and the truck sat down hard on it's tank on a rock or something?

 

Plastic tanks don't dent real well.

 

When the light comes on, siphon the gas into a 5 gal can. Dump that in another vehicle if it fills and continue to siphon until you can tell how much fuel was remaining.

My 2010 RC 5-lug is supposed to have a 21-gallon tank too.

I can’t remember having ever let it get low enough for the warning light to come on though. I am so OCD that I typically fill up between a quarter of a tank and half a tank. Never registered more than 15 gallons...

 

I think it's pretty common for our light to come on where there is still atleast 3 gallons if not maybe 4 left in the tank.

 

When I was detailing cars at a dealership, I got assigned this brand new Ford Flex. The reminder on the gauge cluster said “0 miles to empty” and this thing showed absolutely signs of being remotely low on fuel (sputtering, etc). I think manufacturers design so it makes you think it’s empty, but there’s really a reserve supply of fuel.

I’ve also driven Duramax Silverados that according to their fuel gauges should
have been on fumes and sputtering, but they were fine.

 

Yeah, completely understand the design behind the light with a safety net of gas past the light but I think 3-4 gallons of a safety net is a bit excessive haha.

Why? The pumps use the "reserve" gas to cool your pump. If you didn't have it your pump could actually burn up or start a fire.

 

About a year ago I helped out a motorist in need; They were driving a late 90s 5-speed Chevy C1500 extra cab and I have no idea if it was a V6 or V8, but they ran out of gas. They gave me their gas can and I filled it up with about a gallon and a half of gas, and the truck fired right up. I think there are failsafes in place to keep fuel pumps from burning up.

 

Not really, combustion needs oxygen. The chances of your fuel pump In your tank spontaneously combusting is slim to none.

 

These trucks have a screen in the fillpipe to prevent siphoning. It is intended to stop thieves and has the unfortunate side effect of hindering the owner in these types of circumstances that call for some troubleshooting.

True.. the consensus here on TW says the reserve is about 3.5 gallons (when the gas light comes on).

Unlike most vehicles, the fuel pumps in our trucks are only running when the engine is cranking or actually running. If you are out of gas, you aren't going to crank it very long before you realize there's a problem. And if you're out of gas, the engine won't run. Either way the fuel pump isn't going to experience any excessive use or abuse.
