Exactly. Its not like if the judge sentenced her to 400 years it magically brings those kids back to life.

That seems pretty accurate regarding this case. From my understanding, she did not have any criminal history. It would be unfair of us to ask for life in prison for a senseless tragic accident such as this. You can already imagine the guilt she must carry everyday.

Damn, I couldn’t imagine the family’s emotions right now and the guilt, regret and suffering that girl will go through.

It’s easy to point the finger at someone in these situations. The engineers, school, situation itself and so many other factors.

But at the end of the day we all should be saying a prayer for the family, the girl who did it, and that measures are taken for this never to happen again.

In the short term (next 5 years) things like autonomous driving and driver assistance systems (which are already out there, or on the verge of being deployed) might help prevent things like this from happening. The tech to predict obstacles ahead of the road (or past the car in front of you), recognize stop signs (including a school bus with stop sign extended and flashing) are here , just not fully deployed. Of course nothing is perfect and I'm sure there will always be problems with an "autopilot" but it's certain that the problems that will happen with human drivers will be way way way way more likely so by comparison it is much safer. "make people stop texting", "pay attention or else", "hangem' high", "blehh accountability"...yeah people will always be people. You might improve things a bit with drivers ed or stringent punishments , but the fundamental flaw is the very human driver who makes mistakes. So mitigate the mistake...us in control of driving.

In the long term (next 50 years) the only way to fix ALL things is have some sort of benevolent fascist government where anyone with an IQ below 115 is not allowed to voice their opinions or participate in decision making, we adopte cheap clean safe nuclear power, making energy extremely cheap and abundant which paves the way for a type 1 civilization by 2200...

    ...guilt...

She killed 3 kids at 7:15 and after the cops were done talking to her, she went to work.

I think people default to a "they will feel guilty for the rest of their lives" because it is uncomfortable to believe that someone could do this and not feel bad about it.

It's pretty common in Indiana to hit and kill people, wash the car, throw some deer blood / fur on the car, and get away with it:

    https://www.tribstar.com/news/local...cle_1f0106aa-bfc9-5042-96d1-19f2ad529f8f.html

I knew several people in positions of authority / respect / etc who passed out on their drive home, woke up some time after the car hit whatever it hit, and walked home. The next day the story was that they hit / swerved to avoid hitting a deer and ran off the road, then the deer ran away. One time a full fucking bird colonel was in his car, racing some people that worked for him on ATV's in a corn field, when he hit a telephone pole cutting his car (him too) in half. The local news just said: "He was drunk." (next story).

There's more than corn in Indiana.

4 years for 3 kids is a failure of the justice system. I wouldnt be able to handle that and shell be out in 2 years with good behavior. I'd definitely have a countdown calendar and be there waiting the day she got out. Not saying I would do anything but she would know I was there and who I was .

A guy around where I lived was drunk and high on Cocaine and ran a red light and killed 3 people. He seemed like he was full of guilt in all his facebook pics of him hanging at the beach drinking and taking his car out to the nationals and driving like a dick and doing burnouts up to the day they took him away after trial. He looked so remorseful and sad in those beach pics drinking with his friends and hot rodding his car before he went away for 10 bullshit years. He didnt give a shit and cant wait till hes free again so I have a hard time with this they have to live with this the rest of there life guilt bullshit. Some people dont care plain and simple . What about the Mom that has 3 empty beds in her house full of toys that wont ever get touched again. I couldn't give 2 shits about this chick. My prayers are for the family and the Mom.

There's always 2 sides to every story. You gave one extreme situation, and i agree, drug abusers and alcoholics deserve the full force of the law, but in this situation, in all the articles i read and updates, there was never any indication she was a habitual abuser, had any known criminal history, so I disagree with you here, that not everyone is lumped into the "Go get fucked Category" when they make a mistake.

I think we should base our judgements of all humanity’s failings on some guy you knew. Makes sense.

Truthfully, the most profound thing you can do in your life is forgive those that have wronged you. Even if they don’t deserve or appreciate it.

    You’re entire post is relative.
Have you ever personally been convicted of a crime so terrible that you actually had to live with it the rest of your life?

Have you ever lied to someone you care about, committed adultery, stole from a department store or done something you weren’t proud of?

I don’t side with the girl or believe anything she did was right, but people (you, apparently) love to act like they are high and mighty and have the ability to judge people because they’ve never committed something so terrible.

I’m sure your life hasn’t been all sunshine and daisy’s, and I’m sure you’ve had your share of fuck ups.

This particular fuck up is just considered to be at the top tier of fuck ups.

the girl is 25 years old, and was 24 when it happened. She hasn’t even experienced life yet, and has made an awful, life hindering decision.

You don’t know what that chick is going through. All you know is one experience that you’ve “seen”. Think outside the box a little.

From what I read she was texting and driving and passed a stopped school bus with it red lights flashing and stop signs out. After she hit the kids she asked the driver what did I hit and was told 4 kids. She then went and waited in her truck and waited for police. That doesn't seem remorseful too me.

I have heard that, If convicted of Vehicular homicide in Nicaragua while under the influence has a mandatory execution by Firing squad. This has been done because of so many DUI related Deaths. Haven't heard any statistics whether this has helped. Reading about this tragedy reminded me of this.

Tragic case. And yes, its easy for a defender to wring sympathy from a jury.

I like to visualize things so I went surfing on google maps. The highway is a 55 mph stretch of nothing dotted by occasional housing. Too easy for people to haul ass on. I know that I have hauled ass on many similar roads.

Bus was by the mailboxes facing northbound, tacoma was southbound in the oncoming lane. It looks like a dangerous situation in general. 100% avoidable and 100% the fault of the young lady, but still a dangerous spot.

I hate those situations where you must trust everyone around you to do the correct thing, because that doesnt always happen.

She wasn't drunk. You're talking about something completely different and irrelevant.

And where did you read that she was texting? As far as I can tell, there is no evidence suggesting that.
