I’ve used prepaid, I just pay for what I know won’t overfill the tank but they would give you a refund if you do.
When holding the lever you will feel backpressure on the lever and hear the gas gurgling up the fill tube if you wait too long, let off the lever and you’re done. If you use the lever latch it’s designed to kick off when it’s full due to the back pressure, but on occasion I have seen splash back so when it’s near full I release the latch and feel the back pressure as I hold the lever. Never realized some may not do that.

Yeah basically. It was a very basic pump. It only had a start and stop button and a display fro gallons pumped, no way to swipe card or anything. You cant even enter the amount at the pump, the cashier does it from his bench. You pay inside, they turn the pump on, you go out and press start and that is it. It was a very simple looking pump, so I was concerned if it would stop on its own or not.

They had more pumps for diesel than gas, I assume they mostly sold diesel in bulk.

We took our Tacoma to the dealer this week and I had my wife let them know we get crappy fuel economy. 17-18 is what the computer tells us, math and fill-up logs indicate 14-17 (17 is the best we ever got on a tank). The service writer answered by giving her a lecture about driving in the mountains and how it hurts gas mileage... I wasn’t there or I’d have gone off on him. Our T250 Long wheelbase, tall roof Transit van gets better mileage in the same driving cycle. Towing a small enclosed trailer is where the Tacoma really sucks (the gas). I’m lucky to get 10mpg where the van will get 13-14 all day long. Easy 30% worse. Yea, go ahead and tell me to sell my truck... I like it otherwise but you can’t turn a blind eye to the poor efficiency achieved from the computer controlled engine and transmission. What’s the point of all that engineering which we are paying for. I expected to get 17-19mpg where the 98 ford ranger (2wd) we had the 15 years prior got 20-22 mpg. I am disappointed in 15mpg and I’m not afraid to tell everyone who asked about the truck.

I get 20-22 mpg on highway only trips, but daily average is around 16-17.

I have a 2017 TRD Sport Quad cab 4x4. I ran 47000 on the stock Toyos and averaged just north of 20 mpg per tank, mix of town driving and 4 lane. My truck really suffers after 70 mph or so, gas mileage drops fast which is understandable. Recently I went with Wildpeak AT3s and went with 265/70/17, slightly larger, I am now consistently at 17.9 for the last 1000 miles. The mixture of larger size and more aggressive tread hurt but at least I'm not hydroplaning the truck anymore and it filled up the wheel wells better.

2017 SR V6 4x4, I average 20-21mpg in summer and 16-17mpg in winter with a 50/50 mix of city and highway by miles. 48,000 miles and counting.

2016 TRDOR, I was getting about 21-23 MPG highway.

2020 TRDOR, 750 miles, I'm at 17mpg. guessing breaking in and winter gas. hopefully, once I'm at about 5000 miles, it will be broken in and I'll have better gas mileage. guessing rear end whine from 45-65mph will be back in the new truck by then, but at least MPG will be better.

2019 TRD PRO MT about 3k, and I'm getting about 21 mpg but I'm still pulling from my ranch tank that has summer gas in it, when I run out and have to go to crap CA winter blend, I'm sure it will dip below 20

I'm wondering, on the other hand, if the tank average is not on the full tank but the last x number of data points? A tank average should move up and down ever slower as you approach the last few gallons. Mine seems to move up and down at the same rate now with 80 miles to empty as it has since fill up.

An additional question on this topic would be when & how does the system determine a "new tank"? What happens if you add say $15 bucks worth til you can ostensibly reach your preferred station but go on ahead and run it back down to your normal fill up point?

It probably checks if the fuel level increased since last engine stop. If gas level increased, it assumes you filled up. It even resets with very small amounts of new gas. I had it reset with ~2gallons of new gas.

On my last big trip I came across a truck stop in Oregon that was prepay only (at the pump, with a card, so wtf?). Instead of dealing with that BS, I went down the street and gladly paid the same price....

    For mpg:
We'll, if the fuelly app wasn't hot garbage I would post some data. So Good luck!

While in the US, I have to deal with this BS at every pump. When you pay at the pump, the machine asks for a zip code, which I do not have because I am Canadian (we have postal codes). So I have to go inside, tell them how much I want in US $.
I aim high because I want my tank full and they hopefully refund the overage.
In Canada they release the pump when you fill up. You then go inside to pay for the gas like a normal person.

As for my average fuel consumption, It is about 9 km/l :blahblah:

Some people love to complain. Poor me, I don't get amazing mileage with a truck. Sell it and move on
