And a lot of guys tried to keep Betamax going too.

The thing to keep in mind, is you too will want one of these cars/trucks. Not to save the world, but for the performance first, and convenience second.

I am no electrician, and you are no economist. Neither am I, but I do remember a little about Adam Smith and the laws of supply and demand. So...if demand for oil goes down 10%, the price of gas is going to double? Seems like I remember, and have witnessed for myself, when demand goes down, so does the price, given that supply is constant. Research the Invisible Hand. Basic Economics 302.

Electric motors have more torque, greater efficiency, and smaller footprint than diesels. Their only limiting factor is battery life. What's your point in trashing Tesla when they're just trying to improve cars, in general? I thought competition was good for the free market...

It’s a bit different with gas, as the cost of these massive refineries and pipelines works in scale. Think about having all that refining and transportation burden, which is mostly fixed, shifted on to fewer and fewer customers.

Want? I doubt it. My wife and I bought a new Suburban back in June. I don't like it, it's her car. It's too fancy for me with all the bells and whistles. Give me power windows I'm happy.

Exactly. Every freight train you see is moved by electric motors. Once battery life improves, it won't even be a contest.

OK. That’s fine. But at some point, you might have to put a lot more effort into sticking by your choice. Not anytime soon, but it’s coming in my estimation.

At what cost to the environment to attain this improved battery life? And when do we run out of the basic components of super-efficient batteries? What then will the cost of these batteries do to the cost of purchase and ownership of an electric vehicle, the cost of their electric "fuel" notwithstanding?

Another thing to consider, is electric vehicles are inherently simpler machines, fewer parts, and can be made more reliable than a highly complex gasoline motor with all the Jazz you need to make that work. EVs might even appeal to your utilitarian self.

No one cares about the environment. They want EVs, simply because they want them. There will be money to be made selling them and charging them.

The example makes more sense to me. Wasn't exactly picturing what it would be like. I'm also not familiar with the numbers. For instance, I believe I've read taking an EV from 95% to 100% takes a long time is usually not worth it. Don't quite get why, but smarter people know what they are doing.

On a side note, somebody needs to come up with some new ideas for charging stations. Being standard parking spaces makes sense for an apartment complex or business parking lot, but makes less sense for a roadside supercharger. Its sort of like cars fighting over the free air at the gas station since its next to a parking space that needs pulled into and backed out of. No queue available and just assholes trying to force their way in line.

Are we talking fossil fuels or batteries? Both have issues.

You were talking about freight trains, not trucks. Nothing like an electric airplane with a low battery 10,000 feet in the air.

I mentioned freight trains because they use electric motors, and electric motors will be better for towing, once battery life improves.

All batteries go bad at some point. True they last a lot longer now than they used with improved technology but they all go bad and we never know when that might be. I just don't see battery powered everything happening in our lifetime.
