New gun owner here! Just recently bought a Glock 17 a week after Thanksgiving!! I'm pretty hook after shooting it and want to own more! I know California have strict laws about guns. Any tips I can enjoy this new hobby? What guns should I start looking for? I've only shot a few guns, my buddy hunting rifle (sounds awesome) and his 22 pump Henry rifle! (love that thing) super friendly gun! thanks!

Look into a Mini 14. Versatile, reliable, accurate, equally functional as any AR, and totally under the radar of all crazy CA gun laws. Can even use your lawfully acquired standard capacity mags should you have any. There's worse states to live in currently although it's definitely bottom 5 or 10. Plenty of public land in CA open for shooting, get out there and find "your" favorite spot. I shouldn't have to say it but pick up your trash and do your best to collect your brass

Also, look into buying ammo in Nevada and stocking up. Way better deals.

Or.......look at the newly released Glock 44.......22LR......$370 at Bud's Guns

Whole lot cheaper than a 9mm or 40 to shoot....

    Everyone needs 22 LR's to shoot/plink/hunt with......handguns & rifles

Don’t get caught bringing in ammo from a border state.
Check into BLM and other public lands for shooting areas. Indoor ranges are nice, but I prefer being able to do my own thing without range control scrutiny.

Very hard to get this gun in California. They cooked up a "roster of approved handguns" and mfrs have to jump through hoops to get guns added. Problem is they literally require tech that doesn't exist so new handguns haven't been added in years. It's a pretty clear 2A violation that's currently being challenged in court (i believe it's held up pending the result of NYSRPA vs NYC).

When I hear "clay targets" I think about disks you fling through the air that somebody threw. I hope you weren't shooting your Glock 17 up at flying clay pigeons...

It's not legal and people HAVE been busted by CA DOJ following California plates back from Nevada gun shows.

That said I applaud those defying unconstitutional laws.

If you are SUPER into guns and want to enjoy the hobby, you have a few options. You already realize the California is not a gun-friendly state and probably will never return to being gun-friendly.
    Options:
    1) Live in California and endure eroding gun rights. This may be a viable option if you have a friend/relative out of state that can harbor guns for you. This assumes that they are close enough to make visiting often a reality.
    2) Live in California and and shoot/own guns sanctioned by the state. Prolly gonna pay a premium on guns and ammo living here, and the list of available guns legal to own will diminish over time.
    2) Move to a gun friendly state.

I think any enthusiast needs one handgun, one plinking rifle, and one shotgun.

Here we go, I'm about to catch holy hell for my choice of plinking rifles...

Hi-Point 995. :crapstorm: Surprisingly fun, surprisingly easy, super cheap, and they come with the 10 round mags by default. Also ugly as sin, but hightower armory makes a conversion kit that makes them a little cooler.

I love California :( I don't have any family or friend I can trust out of state.

The number of gun friendly states is diminishing as much as gun rights in restrictive states. Moving just delays the inevitable and gives up ground. I cannot encourage anybody to move to a less restrictive state for the purposes of gun rights because the fight will get to you eventually and by that time your future depends on the precedent already set in places like California. The courts are changing towards our favor and there is a good chance we can see some dominoes start to fall with respect to bad gun law. There are currently worse states to live in.
