You can google anything. Doesn’t make it true.
Toyota hybrid technology has been great.

Toyota warranties the battery for 10 years/150k miles. Yes there are plenty examples with 200k miles still going with original battery. But they are not performing 100% by any means. There are also plenty that fail before 150k miles. It would be very unwise to purchase a prius with 200k miles knowing the very expensive battery is likely on it's last leg. I work at a Toyota dealer body shop, I'm in the service department like every day.

I've owned a prius, the battery was never an issue and I believe in ca the law is Toyota has to give an 8 year warranty on the battery (could have sworn I read about that but I could be wrong)

Anyway I've had two priuses, first one was great the 2nd one burned a quart every 1k miles and according to the prius chat forums it was an extremely common issue.

Both the prius and current tacoma are Atkinson cycle but our Tacomas aren't known for oil consumption so take that how you will.

I recently drove a Camry hybrid loaner for a week and that car was amazing and also non cvt

All good points. I would also say many ICE cars are not performing at 100% at 200k, and lots of them even fail before 150k. Most people consider it unwise to buy a car north of 200k knowing the very expensive engine/trans is likely on it's last leg. What's the point of all this? Mechanical things will fail with use; we all know that.

I was never a hybrid believer. This was my father in laws car that we got for free. It's been great and turned me into a believer, at least for moving light loads. It's not exactly fun to drive, but it does the job while getting 45 mpg and has been 100% reliable.

2 things I worry about though, is all the ICE starts with no oil pressure and instantly putting a load on the ICE as soon as it fires. Maybe that is why some of them use oil, but I have seen many high mileage cars without issue.

This year I bought a Lexus GX470 with just over 200k miles. Toyota designed it to go 300k miles as noted by the maintenance and service intervals. The prius was designed to go 180k miles. I can change the engine, trans, any part on my Lexus or Taco. Not too many can or are willing to work on hybrids.

A lot of vehicles made in the late 2000s through mid 2010s (right around when 0w-20 oil was becoming popular) had oil consumption problems. LOTS. Subaru, Honda, Toyota, practically every brand had certain engines that were susceptible to excess oil consumption, and class action lawsuits popped up all over the place.

It was a big problem back then, but not so much anymore.

Their maintenance schedule is not proof positive of the intended lifespan...and a hybrid freight train will run longer than your Lexus. Who cares? Better tell all the 200k + Prius owners they were supposed to throw their car away 20k miles ago. No one is going to force you to buy a hybrid Tacoma, or a Prius. The new technology is pretty cool, even if lots of people have a defensive reaction to it.

2023 is close, they just did a mid cycle refresh it won’t be sooner plus the source that shared that was extremely credible. 2021 new Tundra, 2022 new 4Runner and 2023, new Tacoma, makes sense from a manufacturing standpoint.

Interesting good to get some inside perspective. There’s no doubt it’s what everyone is moving towards curious how or if these issues will be addressed.

Makes sense. I always feel a little off watching that 0W-20 water flow in when I change the oil. It's not quite the same as the rotella T I used to use in my old MB 300sd.

I drove a Prius 10 years ago and loved it. You can tell that it was designed by an entirely separate dept. at Toyota. It was quiet, comfortable and surprisingly spacious, and handled surprisingly well in wet/snowy conditions with the computerized handling system. Toyota has the technology - they just have to merge the truck guys with the guys in the hybrid dept. and create something that would kick the Cybertruck's a$$.

I wonder if I could hook up my cheap made Chicom EBAY LED lighting to a Hybrid without frying the electrical system or my DRLs:confused:

One day, I'm afraid we will be forced to buy only hybrid or full electric. Especially with the amount of people that are begging for it these days. This is just speculation though.
