Any woodworkers?

If I remember correctly- that was from an oak pallet that came from Italy. I think I still have some pieces lying around from it. Wish I had known how rare spalted wood is back then, I would have hoarded that stuff.

 

yeah its nice when you see it in projects. really not that strong though.

Waterlox definitely has a smell but all good finishes smell that’s how ya know it’s good, the fumes certainly aren’t as toxic as epoxy, I’ve build a couple dozen surfboard on the East coast with epoxy resin and that stuff stinks something fierce. Waterlox smells as it is applied and as it’s drying and curing, but it’s good stuff.

How’d ya cut the slots in the solid blocks for the match boxes ?!? That’s brilliant and beautiful don’t show my wife I’ll have to make these for the next six months. Nice work what’s the finish?

 

I’m gonna guess a mortise machine drill press. That’s how I would do it anyway. Great little tool that doesn’t take up much shop space.

 

I’d go with my router table or drill and clean up with hand chisel every day...

 

I like that option too. It’s just that if I don’t use my mortise press for stuff like that, I’d never use it again. LOL

 

Thanks man! I actually just cut the slot on my router table, with a straight cut bit and then went over the edges with the trim router. You should totally show your wife, they're for sale. That way you don't have to make any.

 

You definitely can't beat the price. Plus, it's always cool to turn weathered, hammered wood into something nice. Speaking of- I just scored a 60" long 4x4 of oak from the 'to be tossed' pile the other day.

I bought my mortise press when I was making my head board for the bed. It was more precise. My OCD made me do it.

 

First time using iron buff on butternut. I'd say it ebonizes very well! The piece on the right is un-ebonized butternut, for reference.

Oh... that. Never heard it called iron buff. Used it tons of times. Usually with black tea to give an aged appearance.

 

Ive only messed with it a little. I didnt know it was called iron buff either. that stuff the guy used was pretty dark.

 

Yeah it was. I usually get 0000 buffing wool and leave it in a jar of white vinegar for anytime I need or want it. You can add more wool but getting it that dark can take awhile. Might have to look into other techniques. Like I said, only used it to age wood for the rustic look so never really needed or tried to get it quite that dark.

Btw- The tea will mold after awhile so that usually has to be made no more then a couple months prior to use.

 

never used the tea in it. I just used steel wool and vinegar. Wonder what he's making.
