This scientist has developed a new diesel injector technology, DFI (ducted fuel injector) that clean burns diesel fuel eliminating the need for DEF and DPF both. I hope Toyota is an early adopter of this and we see diesels here in the USA soon. The DPF and DEF emission controls reminds me of 1980's gas vehicles, very poorly designed emissions equipment back then too.

I want a diesel 2.8L Tacoma 4x4 extra cab 6.1 ft bed truck. But I don't want the diesel particulate filter nor the def fluid injection, both can and do cause problems when your in the outback way away from a toyota dealership. Toyota is experiencing some heavy problems in australia now with diesel particulate filters on vehicles such as Prado, failures in DPF systems can cause total breakdown a long way from home and has been the norm for them. These emissions systems are flawed and cause no end of trouble for owners.

Something as simple as a new injector would eliminate thousands of dollars in emissions parts sounds like a win to me. Plus reliability would return. What Toyota was noted for at one time.

You are just now in 2020 seeing Android Auto and CarPlay on a Tacoma. Toyota will be the very last to implement that technology.

This exciting new technology has the capability of vastly reducing diesel emissions on large cargo vessels, tractor trailers, the farming industry, etc. It’s a HUGE diesel emissions breakthrough and to think that the idea came from the Bunsen burner. Some company is going to jump on this and make billions in revenue.

I don’t get this forum and it’s diesel obsession, except maybe the notion that they drive a midsize platform and secretly wish they had a full size diesel (except they laughingly wouldn’t want to pay for it, park it, or have shitty resale value).

If you want anything worth a damn, you’ll be happy with hybrid. Otherwise, what a waste of time and mental space for every single year to get all hot and heavy that “next year is the year of the diesel!”

Zero chance, guys. Get over it.

Thank you for sharing this article. I work on Common Rail Diesel engines with EGR, DPF and SCR systems. They regularly fail and need constant maintenance. This is an interesting solution to the combustion system. I hope that something like this comes to the equipment I work with but I think electric power will take over first.

As for Toyota, the article states that Toyota does recognize the system reduces soot in the diesel engine. Will we see a diesel equipped with this system here in North America produced by Toyota? It would be nice but I am not going to hold my breath.

I agree that current diesels are strangled with with complicated emission equipment thanks to federal requirements. DPF’s, urea fluid tanks, soot burn off cycles, sensors up the ass, etc. Without diagnostic equipment from the dealer you are basically screwed after the factory warranty expires. Diesel in a US Toyota? Forget about it...

Toyota has never been an early adopter of anything. They finally introduced cup holders, but still haven’t caught on to the whole “large size cup holder” thing that got going on the early 2000s.

An exception might be the Prius. That led the charge for hybrids.

I honesty would be very surprised if they came out of the gates with a new Diesel engine, but maybe.

Toyota has had diesels everywhere but the US for a very long time. I don't think it was the technology holding them back, so I would be surprised if this changed their equation.

Exactly. Toyota has been running diesels in the Hilux for decades; everywhere but here. And they just announced the Tacoma hybrid is set for release in 3-4 years. I myself would appreciate a diesel plant for the torque & fuel economy.
