4th Gen?

Just going by previous gens, I’m thinking you won’t see a 4th gen until 2024ish.

 

I actually think it will come out before 2025, only because I expect to see a new Frontier, Colorado, and Ranger (possibly new Dakota) before then.

 

And they may steal the Ridgeline's singing rear cargo bed too.

 

It’s a contrivance by Toyota. They can’t bring out a new generation till the majority of buyers of the very first previous gens in 2016 have had their trucks for 10 years or 200k miles, which ever comes first.
There will be no new cab design to increase head room and have more upright seating. Instead, all Tacoma’s will just be modified to have standard sunroofs left in the open position without Glass. Of course that will require the rubber interior upgrade package and the super high flow heater vents in the inclement weather package. By then, the base model will be $40k but will still outsell every other truck cause after all, fresh air is best.

 

I want that tailgate. Bad.

 

A vibrating tailgate would be nice, just don't drink beer on it like that scene from Plains Trains & Automobiles.

 

Toyota will be addressing the #1 Tundra complaint with the 2021 model; poor fuel mileage. The current Tundra is rated 13/17 For 4WD models.

 

I agree they will look to address efficiency with the redesign but I see relatively few complaints on Tundras.com regarding mpg. Where it falls short is payload, towing capacity, and technology vs. the competition. I believe, based on the surveys I receive, that Toyota is going to concede payload and towing to the other 1/2 ton trucks. The questions focus on how the consumer will respond to reduced capabilities.

 

Really, anything more then what the Trundra does is in 3/4 ton category. That’s no problem. It’s a race Toyota isn’t prepared to take part in. Ford is the leading seller because it offers the most options. That’s never been the Taco or Tundras Schtick

 

Knowing Toyota’s vision for the Tundra, they’ll probably double-down and the 2021 Tundra with get like 9MPG city, and 11 highway, but have 7 hoodscoops.

 

My Tacoma had a higher payload rating than my Tundra.

 

I'd be hoping for this, I'm glad these are all coming back, needed competition for Toyota. Gladiators are kinda interesting and the Broncos coming out with multiple MT options is great, a kick perhaps for 4runners (absolutely not holding my breath on that however).

 

Wasn't the new tundra supposed to come out for super bowl?

almost too good! realize they don't want to undercut current sales but hope they have something lined up sooner in the cycle than the ~10-12 current cycle. It's ridiculous the Tundra and 4Runner have received such limited love. Really looking forward to seeing what they come up with, much more competitive now and that (should) benefit all of us

 

Toyota better step it up for Gen 4....the new Nissan Frontier looks like it could be some real competition if priced lower than the Tacoma.

 

In todays world how long, does it take for a model to go from conception to a dealers lot ?

 

I'm by no means an expert on this, but it can vary widely. Toyota seems to take their time, and upgrade items once they've been tried and proven. Generally, a vehicle's run time is around 7 years. with "Refreshes" inbetween. Seems like Toyota is closer to 10 years as their model cycle for the tacoma.
