The TRD Sport doesn't even have a locker anyway, it has an LSD. It's the OR that has a locker.

Not sure about the LSD diff, but the locker and non-locker diffs are different. The non locker diff is the 8.4" and the E-locker diff is the 8". It's weird, but they're both 8" ring gears, but there's some differences in the splines and housing shape I believe. I know that's true for the 1st gens, and pretty sure that's carried thru all generations.

Sport should be an 8" and OR should be a 8.75" I believe... again, drunk and happy friday!

I should start by apologizing here, I often forget the difference between 2nd and 3rd gens

IIRC the OR is 8" and the Sport is 8.5"

I am not all too knowledgable with the 3rd gens so excuse me if I made a mistake here

    There's an 8" and an 8.4" diff.

Here's a little secret though. They're both 8" ring gears.

This is true for 2nd gens. TRD E-Lockers were 8" and 4 bangers/non-Elockers were 8.4". Not sure what the Sports got.

3rd gens there's 8" and 8.75" in the mix I think. Not sure the details.

Either way I know they're not all interchangeable and it's one of many ways OP could have screwed the pooch here.

I like how we're two pages in and have essentially starting making things up since OP hasn't responded to any questions yet.

I'm betting it's still the same size ring gear though.

From what ive read, there are 8 inch and 8.75. pro, offroad and manuals got the big diffs.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-rear-axle.509454/

    8 inch nitro gears
    https://www.nitro-gear.com/Toyota-8-CS-8-Nitro-Gear-Package-p/gptaco2016-select.htm
    8.75 inch nitro gears
    https://www.nitro-gear.com/Toyota-Tacoma-Nitro-Gear-Package-p/gptaco2016-8.75-select.htm

They lists with and without OEM locker as options. without OEM locker lists both 8 and 8.75 inch diffs, while with OEM locker only lists 8.75.
OEM locker was only a option on offroad and pro models as part of the crawl control system.

8.75 is listed in the without oem locker for manual cars as they came in offroads and pros but didnt get crawl control due to the manual transmission.

How I took the thread is that they swapped over the whole axle assembly, so they did not move gears into the old diff. Mainly I am assuming since he put the struts in there too, and it would be dumb to take apart 2 axles to make 1 axle when both are fully working and assembled already.

Locker is not part of crawl. Manual ORs and Pros have lockers.

Like, the internet and stuff. There's a lot of info out there, it's even searchable. :D

    For example:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/8-vs-8-4-diff.325590/
    https://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/228681-myth-settled-8-4-v6-4cyl-all-8-a.html

But like was said earlier, that specifically applies to the 1st/2nd gens, 3rd gens are slightly different in that they have an 8.75 diff, however I'm betting they still have the same ring gear size, and the "8.75" is just to indicate that the diffs are not interchangeable.

I'm too lazy right now to search for that exact topic, however.

I googled it and was too lazy to search. I sold differentials for 10 yrs of my life and have never heard of that before so it was a legit question. As for now, I'll take your word for it because I'm too lazy to ready any further into it. Plus, I wouldn't have taken apart my diff in a garage with no knowledge on how to put it back together so I'll never be in this situation.
