Thanks for the reply and the link, I will give it a try. Would be good to give feedback to the OV Tune team. Are you running the 87 or 91?

 

The power out of the 91 performance tune is exceptional, all I need them to do was clean up the jerky throttle hello RPMs between 1000 and 2000. If that is fixed then I am golden. We shall see

The 2.0 tune is not specific for 87 or 91, it’s both. I’m running the 2.0 because it fixed the vibration/hesitation driveline issue. I’m digging it so far.

History
I've owned my truck for the better part of a year now. I started with the simple engine upgrades K&N intake system and MBRP Exhaust. The truck was louder maybe a hair more responsive (Probably Mental due to money spent). But the throttle still lagged and the truck felt like a 4cyl. You had to push the pedal 1/2-3/4 down to get the truck moving and I felt I only had power past 5000RPMS.

Fast forward: 12/3 I loaded the Base 87 tune. Pedal felt much better shifts cleaned up and I picked up almost 1.5MPG. Daily driving the truck was more enjoyable. It held 6th gear didnt downshift to 4th and made commuting easier. Power seemed the same maybe a tad more but the pedal was more responsive. The truck felt like a finely tuned Stock truck. But still left more to be desired. I felt like I was driving a better tuned factory truck.

12/5 After 400miles on the base tune I loaded the 87 performance tune. Wow huge difference pedal was very responsive almost a tad too much pulling into and out of the garage. Shifts now follow the pedal which allows you to drive stock sporty or all out. Daily driving is so much more enjoyable the truck feels to pick up power after 3000RPMS and holds it through the power band. Driving on long trips the transmission stays in 6th and will downshift to 5th to climb a small hill or make a easy pass. Move the throttle 1/2 or more and it kicks into 4th or 3rd to allow you the power needed to pass. Towing greatly improved as well I tow 2500lbs and feel I can safely catch a light or merge into traffic. During normal driving MPG gained maybe .4-.5 but the drive ability is worth it. I was so happy I actually made a youtube review to try and help potential buyers.

Overall: I've only tried the 87 tunes and am very happy. I now enjoy daily driving my truck. I feel like a have a strong V6 under the hood and the pedal matches the pressure applied.

Cons: Can take some getting used to the sensitive throttle when coming from a stop maybe a hair less sensitivity (when coming from a stand still). Also once cruising at 65-70mph you need to use 1/2 throttle or more to really get the trans to drop multiple gears. (This doesnt bother me but I could see some people annoyed by it).
Sort of those I cant really complain you make more power on regular 87 can get the same or better MPG if you drive kindly and get to enjoy your truck. So far a great experience and I haven't touched the 93 tunes yet.

• purchased 11/15/19, installed about a week and a half later (though I received the kit and registration very quickly, I think only 3 business days total, the truck was getting some fab work done at that time, delaying my install)
• Running 1.05 base 93 tune on the truck described in my info above
• Rated it 5 stars, but I think I would actually give it 4.5 at this point. 2.0 sounds like it might earn a full 5 stars from me.
• No mods to speak of. I am carrying a good bit of weight and drag from my work equipment and flatbed. Haven’t weighed it yet.
• Overall feedback of:
• Shifting: improved about 80%. Still seems pretty quick to upshift, but it’s slower to downshift, and powers up small inclines in a higher gear than it could on the stock tune.
• Throttle: also improved 80-90%. Response is more linear and predictable. Not yet perfect
• Power: definitely improved in the low end, and the power progression is smoother. No sudden jolt at ~4k rpm

I tried out the performance tune first, and while I liked the power improvement, the throttle was just a little too touchy for my taste. I would really love to get all of the benefits of the performance tune, but with a similar throttle profile as the base tune. I’m very, very tempted to install the 2.0 beta right now

 

Jump to 2.0 beta.... I went from 1.05 87 performance to the 2.0 , 91 ..... smooths out the tip in, but overall the beta is much more refined. Can’t wait for the final 2.0 at Christmas!!!

 

i installed the 87 performance last night on my 2019 and man did it change the throttle response, almost too much. I thought the truck shifted ok but in my opinion it shifts better now. I will drive it a few more days and maybe change it to the 1.05 base. i am curious to play around with the different tunes and looking forward to the 2.0 as well. I am really impressed so far,

 

I went ahead and installed the beta 91 shortly after you posted. From the few miles I was able to drive, I have to agree. Tip-in is much better. Performance is solid.

Looking forward to the full release. I’m assuming that there will be a 2.0 93 tune available at some point. 91 is less common around here (So.VT) than 93, so I just fill up on 93.

 

I'm looking forward to the 2.0 full release also. I love the difference between stock and this tune but I'm still getting a few strange shift patterns when running at mid to higher range revs, and I hope the final tune will have taken some of that away...

As I say, still night and day from stock and well worth the investment IMHO

 

I am one of the ones that gave it a low review. I purchased mine in October 2019, Order #5267 for my 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport, 2 wheel drive. Manuel transmission with slightly larger tires as the only mod to possibly effect performance. My problem is the lack of customer support. I'm 68 and not the best on the computer. I purchased an HP laptop especially to download the program for my truck. When I ran into a problem downloading, I found that the only help available was to email OVTune and wait 3 to 5 days for a response. This went on for several weeks and I received several sarcastic emails from Mathew, (Which I will share if necessary) that I should read the instructions because it has all of the answers. A month later I was able to download the program. The performance was there but I have a problem with the idle pulsing. After several emails to OVTune, they sent me a link that would allow them to sign on to my computer and check what might be the problem, I did as the asked and to this day they have not responded. I still have the problem. Now, the program is probably good but you best be very computer literate and be able to figure everything out for yourself as there was no customer support for me. I read a lot of good experiences but mine is less than stellar and I still have the problem. I did the idle adjust for 15 minutes and everything else. So far for me, I waisted $700.00.

As far as connecting with anydesk, this is something we do for people who need help but it's not something that we allocate time for by default so I have to fit it in when possible.

 

I know the sweet spot for most of our trucks is 4.88s (or 5.29) + OVT. Between this and the development thread I can't remember if I've seen anyone that's experienced both getting gears first and then adding OVT, as well as starting with OVT and then re-gearing. Of the two mods, which made the most difference?

Obviously, it's unlikely this would be on the same truck. Maybe they've had 2 3rd gens. Maybe it's a friend's.

 

Did gears and 33s first, then the tune. My opinion, is if you do 33s and hwy driving you need the gears 4.88s. If you do 35s you need 5.29s. My truck drove fairy well with just the gears and the last TSB. I tow a RV and do a bit of off roading in the backwoods of Colorado and Utah so my truck is armoured, lifted, bumper and winch so I'm heavy. The tune solved all the transmission shifting problems while towing and hills. I was a mechanic for years when I was young and I will tell you one thing, you never be happy driving a incorrectly geared truck. You can never solve the other problems but gearing is a foundational problem that has to be solved before you add other things if you go larger tires if you stay stock I would go with the tune first. Good luck with what ever you choose to do first.

 

Fully armored, heavy long bed on 35's here. I started with the SSP early on and it helped a bit. When 4.88 came out, I was an early adopter and that made a huge difference. I tried running both the SSP and tune together, but then the shift points were too high. Basically, the SSP wasn't needed after the regear. Then OV tune came out and I watched this thread for a while. Initial comments were positive, so I bought the tune and that made a world of a difference as well.

TLDR: Regear is a must, but the combination of that and OVTune provides you with a truck that drives how it's supposed to.

 

This my conclusion as well. For many readers pretty sure I sound like a scratched LP record.

 

Anyone have feedback on OVT on the 2020's? Did I read it doesn't help while on cruise control? (I do a lot of highway driving)

 

I own a 2019 TRD Sport w AT, and am trying to determine how much the factory transmission setup has changed since this thread began. Is the need for OVTune the same as it was 3 model years ago?

Yes, I have noticed the newer released versions of the OV Tune in this thread, but I'm not experiencing the same issues I see described here, especially when I run in ECT. What performance results are you 2019 owners out there with OVTune seeing that I might be missing?

 

Transmission gearing hasn't changed, but the stock tune on the 2019s may have some updates that were done through the Toyota TSBs.
