What some fellas miss, is you just keep on burning the oil, all day, every day, but in stationary power plants. The oil companies will be the ones to benefit off charging all these cars.

The main goal of electric cars is energy efficiency. Regardless of the source of the energy.

Why carry around the fuel tank, the cooling system, the combustion chamber, the pollution controls, the exhaust system, the ignition system, and the lubrication system with you? That’s all heavy kit, complex, and a waste of time. Ditch all the stuff at the stationary oil-fired power plant and just carry the energy in a battery.

An interesting thing to consider: electric cars and trucks weigh the same full or empty. You could more finely tune the suspension without having to consider the dynamics of full and empty gas tanks. Toyota will still make an electric Tacoma have taco lean though.

I read awhile back that Toyota was doubling down on hydrogen fuel cells and more recently that Toyota gas been caught flat footed by EV.

Anybody remember what personal computers were before Bill Gates and Steve Jobs?

They more or less created that revolution that IBM was missing.

HP developed "windows gui" and didn't know what to do with it.

    Mac128k came out in 1984.

About 20 years later, the iPhone.

Who saw this coming? Very few- well Robert Noyce saw it all coming in the 50's- anybody know about him?

Yeah this is the case. I completely support a gradual switch to EV (mainly because electrical motors are more efficient at converting energy) but we need to understand that it wouldn’t cut the emissions by a huge margin. What it does it it will reduce the emissions from the cars on the road and add it to power plants. We are no where near the capacity to produce that energy sustainably and nuclear power plants are “scapegoated” for everything. So basically a Tesla or Tacoma both run on fossil fuels. Tacoma burns it own fuel, Tesla uses the electricity generated by a power plant that burns fuel.

In addition to this, mining and processing for metal & minerals that are required to built batteries are some of the worlds most environmentally unfriendly operations. They have a huge carbon footprint and basically destroy the area that mining happens. As an example, people need to read how cobalt is mined in Congo using slave and child labor and destroys Congo rainforest.

If you want to be environmentally concision with your choice of vehicle, don’t buy new ones very often. Building a new car (including everything like steel, rubber, glass, electronics, everything) has a carbon footprint equivalent to driving it for something like 8-10years. Environmentally friendly thing to do is to use that vehicle and not encourage manufacturers to build more. Buying a Tesla or Prius every 3 years is probably worse than using a V8 for daily commute for 10 years.

I dunno. Toyota has a lot of experience with hybrids, and a huge amount of investment in it that will translate into EV designs. I think they may be strategically waiting for battery technology to settle out and be good enough.

The 300hp plug-in hybrid RAV4 coming out next year has me really curious, especially since it's using NiMH batteries.

I think Toyota is secretly owned by the oil companies. What else can explain the Tundra?

Toyota will use Tokyo Olympics to debut solid-state battery electric vehicle
“Solid-state batteries are the holy grail of battery technology for automakers, but it'll be a while before they reach production.

Japanese corporate giants Toyota Motor and Panasonic are joining forces to face the growing demand for plug-in vehicles. According to Nikkei, their plan is to launch a joint venture for battery manufacturing as soon as 2020. Both companies hope to achieve battery cost reduction and increased manufacturing scale in order to better compete with Chinese competitors.”

That's new to me! Is that due to safety concerns over Li batts?

Oil is a very small slice of the supply for electric power generation. New fossil fuel plants over the last 20 or more years are all NG combined cycle. Like @Gritto said, the condensate produced as a byproduct of NG extraction will be used for something.

Li Ion batteries... LiPo batteries are much safer, but aren't cheap enough to justify mass manufacturing just yet. Once those batteries have scaled, it'll be hard to beat their inherent safety.

You've piqued my interest. Reading now.

Correct. But they won't burn oil.

For sure. My point being, we overcame the safety issues of all driving around with tanks of gas.

Fair. We should all pressurize our tanks with NEA after a tank fill just to be safe...

I didn't realize lipo was inherently safer, certainly not after watched a few go up after a drone crash.
