The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review

Well sh!t, I was waiting on the lighting specialist @crashnburn80 test results on these but I’m going to trust @Diode Dynamics specs and buy myself a New Years present.

 

Looking at the output pictures guys have posted up I wouldn’t Be afraid to buy them. I wanted to wait for some more input on those and the BD “fix” but I don’t think that situations gonna get any better

 

I don't think so, as the beam pattern is very flat and focused. However, I think only one pair is street legal, as two pairs may overlap and increase intensity past the legal limit.

You could get a second pair of driving pattern lights (J581) and run them legally as auxiliary high beams. This way you could have distance-augmenting light that is also street legal.

 

I’d probably limit their use to the back roads I drive for work (75 miles one way) so I’m not super concerned about legalities but I still don’t want to blind people.

I’d honestly probably never use an sae driving light with nearly 60k lumens of BD lighting at my fingertips. Guess I could get a pair of white and pair of yellow SS3s but the 6000k white of diode dynamics doesn’t thrill me

 

I think I’ll just get 2 pairs of yellow pros and when they start selling lenses I’ll get clear for one, wire the 2 sets separately then I’ll have fogs for any weather condition

 

Sounds reasonable. I have some offroad lights as well, but I got a set of DD driving lights in addition to the fogs. I figure it'll be nice to have street legal beams that I can operate quickly with the signal stalk.

 

If I didn’t have any other lighting that’d absolutely be the way to go

What would be the best selective yellow or amber pod led to get for someone who wants to stay legal and not glare other drivers?

Is that kinda where the thread conversation is right now as of the last few days?

I don’t know all the abbreviations for the lights and have only been popping in here periodically. My interest is high, but I’ve been busy and it’s been hard keeping up with this thread. Just wondered if someone could give me a quick summary of where the discussion is at right now.

diode dynamics or rigid, both have a couple sae options, depends what you wanna spend

 

The KC G4s are in the conversation too, although they are way more amber than yellow

 

105 pages in a nutshell here, rigid has been the clear winner for selective yellow, and KC for amber, until recently when diode dynamics released their new selective yellow pods. These are showing great so far on trucks of people who have already received them, but a lot of us are kinda waiting for @crashnburn80 to get his hands on a set so he can flash some fucking objective science at us and give his esteemed opinion. Baja designs shit the bed on their street legal fogs (too much light up high), and had to halt sales while they fabbed up a shoddy but necessary fix. You can find more on that a page or two back, as it just came out.

 

Of course it’s subjective but I don’t think they are. They put out a lot less usable light then the other 2 and for the same or more money I don’t feel they’re a very good value. I personally wouldn’t even consider them but that’s just my opinion.

so I had 2 pairs of BD SAEs on order that I cancelled and just ordered 2 sets of SS3 pros, one in yellow and one clear, then I’ll have fogs for any weather. Hopefully I don’t hate the 6k clear being use to BD 5k

 

So back to fog lights. Call me naive, but would a company with a reputation and experience like Baja Design really just blow it on their execution of the fog lights? They know what they’re competing against and have the tech to do it well. Just seems like what they are putting out for the SAE still would have to be in the ballpark right?
