2004 Component Speaker Install

I want to do a new audio system in my 2004 Tacoma Double Cab. I really want to use component speakers but want to keep the stock look. Is it possible to put new tweeters behind the stock grill? Thanks for the help!

 

I have seen tweeters installed that don't use the stock grill. http://www.customtacos.com/forum/showpost.php?p=726224&postcount=13 , but I can't remember seeing any aftermarket tweeters using the stock grill (not that it can't or hasn't been done). The stock grill is pretty shallow. Maybe you could get some inverted dome tweeters in there?

I personally don't like to have the tweeter separated from the mid/woof that far. Of course the trade-off is sending the highs into your leg. Some coax speakers do have an adjustable tweeter that you can angle up for less high frequency roll-off if you go that route.

I put in Alpine SPR17s components. The 1" tweets fit fine in the stock location. The 6" woofers had to be put in the back door due to the depth. I Had to make baffles out of 1/2" MDF also had to do some minor trimming on the door panels. In the front doors I left the factory speakers. After some tunning I am very pleased how it sounds.

 

Most tweeters will actually fit behind the stock grill. You may have to do a little fabbing to figure out how to mount them, but they'll generally fit (w/o the aftermarket grill still attatched). Another option is to paint the grill on the aftermarket tweets to match. Most people would never even notice.

I installed some Alpine Components in my 01 Extra Cab this past weekend. The only issue we ran into was speaker depth on the 6.5s. We used 3/4 plywood to make a new mounting bracket and then used the plastic speaker mounting kit that came w/the speakers. It cleared inside the door but gave us problems with the door panel. We trimmed a few areas on the panel and still had issues. We ended ordering some replacements online that fit 6.5s. I think if we used some 1/2 wood we might have been in the clear.
The tweeters fit fine in the stock location. I used strap tape to hold them in place. (I got it in the plumbing area at Lowes. looks like https://www.plumbersstock.com/images/products/large/00291269.jpg )

 

Which Alpines did you get? I am starting to reseach new components, and wanted to try 6.5s. I listened to some at Best Buy, and they were great. I think it was the SPS-600C

Also, were you able to retain the stock grills on both the tweeters and the woofers?

I got them from a friend that had them in the original box for a few years. He tossed the box when he brought them over. Everything looks stock. All grills are in place. I also used the stock head unit and it sounds fine.

 

I know this thread is old, but this is exactly what I am trying to do. Can you post pics of your install?

 

i know bostons tweeters are pretty small, u could probably fab up somethin small to hold it in place behind the grill so u dont have to use the provided bracket

 

I put a set of Kenwood components in the stock locations, it wasnt that bad.

I used the existing brackets with just 1 screw on the speakers, and they fit pretty well, the grills have a little angle to them, they are not perfectly flush, but nobody notices.
The box is double sided taped to the door panel, and I did put a QD to disconnect them when I pull the door panels off.

I also put a Kenwood SW1 under the seat, it works well.

Yes, it is possible to use the stock grill, I have done it. It just depends on which tweeters (how deep they are).
