Last week I went through our Departments Lieutenants promotional exams. How it works on our job is that as needed, through strict seniority, applications are posted to go through the process. This year they called for eight and I was one of them. Step one is to complete the IFSTA Company Officer Training Program which we did in July. Next is a 6 week preparation period for the three day examination process. Tuesday we did a 3 hour written exam and on that I scored a 91%. Wednesday we did our practical evaluations in front of a 5 person board made up of two Union representatives, two Management members and a facilitator. I felt good during this process but to say that it was stressful is an understatement. With the aid of a computer simulator we were given two different scenarios where you role-played as a Company Officer. Points were awarded for proper procedure and decision making as the scenarios changed dynamically. Unfortunately one of the group was not successful in this stage and as a result was eliminated from the process. ( He will have the opportunity to reapply when they call again) The final step on Friday was a 12 minute speech/ presentation that was done in front of the Board.

With the sucessful completion of this process we would be promoted to "Senior Firefighter". The role of a Senior Man is that you no longer drive and when the Officer is out you are the Acting Lt. in your Company. With it comes a 5% raise and as retirements occur you are promoted to a permenant Lt. as per seniority.

Final marks are announced on Monday the 27th. I'm in my 22nd year on the job and if successful I would be the youngest SM on our Department.........Wish me luck, keep you posted.

I'm pulling for you Marc!!! I wish you the best and I hope you get the position you want. Every since my 11 year old son could talk he has wanted to be a fireman. I believe he is being called to it. He still stands in awe to this day when he sees a firetruck. I have several fireman buddies and your brotherhood is something I'm proud for my son to look up to. Thanks for your service Marc!:)

Good luck man!!! I passed our EO test last November and promoted to driver. As a driver we also fill in if the captain is off. I must say that's one hell of a promotional exam. All we have is a written test. But sounds like you ur gunna have this thing licked! Again good luck.

Sorry Gang, I was out of town Mountain biking until last night and came home to find out that the official results have not been posted due to the Chief being unexpectedly out of town. I'm fairly confident that things went well but have been declining hand shakes from well wishing co-workers until I see it in print.

The word is that we should know something soon and I want you all to know how much your support and positive vibes mean to me.

Believe me when I say.....As soon as I know something it'll be posted here. :D

Good luck! That's a hell of a promotion procedure. Here in Jax. you take a written test and high score gets the open spots. The list is good for 2 years and as a spot comes open it is filled with the next guy on the list.
