Pretty lousy on my 06 Tacoma. They would get full of grit/mud/sand off-road. I had the parking brake lock on several times. The main issue was the bias, the truck relied heavily on the front brakes. The problem was the rotors did not last, especially with slightly larger tires.

My 10 Frontier has none of these problems. It stops nice and level and the pedal feel is decent. It already had 265/75R16s on it when I bought it so I guess it was designed with that in mind.

I plan having a collection of "antique" pickups in 30 years (Tacomas, Tundras, and various Chevy and GMC trucks).

Where are all those S10's now? Even ABS couldn't save them from the junkyard.

It might have had ABS, but the paint was shit, the base engine was shit and the overall quality was shit. It's like one had to be drunk with a partial stroke to buy one.

I think it was one of the last years it was optional on the Tacoma.

My 94 full size Blazer had abs. They were awful.

The base, Soviet tractor grade 2.5L 4-banger and the 2.8L V6 were shit; The 4.3L was good. Go to just about any truck show and you'll see plenty of decent 1st Gen S-10s.

I agree with you there; I've heard that a lot of people disable ABS in older GM products.

Does your 2000 Taco have A/C?

The first years of new tech always suck. Apparently the only way to bleed the abs unit was to take it out of the truck and do it on the bench. It was not small, either.

My taco does have AC, complete with a leaking expansion valve.

I had to replace an evaporator core a little over a year ago...

    A/C works great now!

I towed that much weight plus 3000-4000, and it was fine, but it was for short distances, just to launch boats. If you are going to tow greater distances , I assume you will have trailer brakes. Personally, I would not expect the Truck to brake that much weight very well at all on any trip. It’s just too light and the brakes aren’t meant for it...even if they were discs.
Also, drums just won’t ventilate well down long grades.

Personally, I like drum brakes on the rear because they work with the traction control well as drums need less pressure to activate.
The lsd works amazingly well with drums.
Again, I wouldn’t tow much weight any distance without trailer brakes.

:santa: If you are planning on towing around 5000 pounds frequently this truck is too small from what other people have said, around 4500 lbs seems to be a number that I hear that people are happy with, but I do know people go over five but not in the mountains and it should do OK. I guess it all kind of depends on where you live.

also a lot of states it’s illegal to have a trailer over 3000 pounds without brakes so I’m sure yours has it anyways, have fun trying to figure out where you wanna put the brake controller. I’m loaded up to 2750 LBS on my camper with no brakes on it and does OK plus the extra thousand I have With the passengers in gear. I do about 3000 to 5000 miles a year towing so it’s not really a lot but if you want to really know there’s some towing forms on here that go deeply into how well it behaves towing heavier weights.

And OP. Welcome to Tacoma world and merry Christmas. :santa:

PS. I may be older than you

I listed some of the other Trucks I’ve owned, 78 GMC, 87 (if I remember correctly) Ford F150, 2007 Colorado (which I liked), but forgot about that used 80s ish S10 I bought for $700, had the “soviet tractor grade” (lol) 4 cyl, leaked oil in the driveway, hood paint faded and peeling, got rid of it as soon as I could, that thing was equivalent quality to the Pinto and Vega lol

I still love the old S10s; They’re best with a 350 V8 under the hood!
