I bike everywhere on a single speed bike every day. It is awesome and very easy because of the lack of hills. There are nice bike lanes on 4th and 3rd street. I live on the East side of the city so it is perfect.

If you have gears, you can get anywhere, the only place I've gone that I wished I had gears in the actual city was UT since there is a small hill heading that way, but it is nothing big.

Sweet deal, I would consider that then. I have....a few bikes. Road bike, hybrid, mountain, BMX, beater road. And my wife's 1 road bike :D I'd probably try the hybrid.

Yeah I put hybrid tires on my single speed because I was slipping around in the rain a bit, but aside from the rain, it's been amazing. Roads aren't bad, bike lanes are great, and easy. I feel bad because I barely drive my tacoma anymore.

Would you be apartment / condo or house living. It seems easier to find an apartment / condo in good bike distance, but houses aren't too far either.

First year or two probably in an apartment right in the city. Then looking to move toward a house.

Way different down there though. Everything is in an HOA :( RI is cold but other than the cold (and Austin is warmer but not as warm as I thought it would be in the winters now watching the forecast) and a bit of snow (we really don't get much) I like it. This vacation is a fact finding mission basically. I'm pessimistic due to the size of Austin, I'm not a big city boy.

I only rack up about 10k/year in mileage with such a short commute.

I view Austin as a very small big city if that makes sense. What I mean is, if you live near downtown (I live 2 miles away), you can get pretty much across the entire city walking / biking / not touching your car.

There are a decent amount of people, but not overwhelming like NYC, Boston, Chicago, LA. I lived and worked in LA and Santa Barbara. LA is huge and ridiculous, SB is a very small beach town where everybody knows everybody. I would say Austin is a good middle ground between those two.

Unfortunately what might land me in Dallas... I'm an FAA repair station QA manager. I have a bs in mechanical engineering, masters in stats, and a background in aerospace mfg and medical R&D both in QA roles. Looking to bridge to manufacturing or design engineering though.

I say Dallas because American has a big repair facility there I think. I'm just in a job shop right now not dealing with EOW repairs but the same rules and regs apply. Flexible though, I'm not attached to aero anymore.

My company has a few places in other sectors in Texas, nothing austin though. So it'd be a company hop too.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm more of a beer guy less of a martini guy.

Wierd question, any recommendations on vegan barbecue? I'm not vegan but my wife is. I don't like to toot my own horn a lot but toot toot, I am good at smoking and smoke my own stuff a lot. Typically sausages and turkey, they're my favorites. So I'm not really drawn to going out for BBQ myself since... I'm good at it. But, I'm not great at vegan.

This city is so hipster, I feel like there is vegan everywhere haha.

I personally do not eat vegan really so I don't have suggestions. Sorry!

And for beer, on the east side, Zilker is my favorite.

You think I eat vegan?:rofl:

I'll have to check the beer scene. I am a beer guy but not a manly beer guy. I love me some pilsner and easier to drink beers. Not a fan of ipa and strong shit.

By any chance any Cider breweries? We have a ton up here, but it's basically all apple orchards in New England.

For being 2 days until Christmas, work is busy AF.

    Do not like.

Hope y'all have a Merry Christmas and that Santa is very, very good to my Austin peeps. I'm probably going dark for a few days with Christmas, followed immediately by visitors, followed immediately by a road trip to a wedding.

Ho ho ho holy shit, this is going to be some week!!

East Ciders. Austin has about a half-dozen or so cider breweries and urban wineries. They're pretty popular so they're easy to find.

Didn't your company recently get bought? I bet the new owners took a pay raise.
