My serpentine belt took a chit

    After berating USA made Bando, I think the problem is me. Looks like I didn’t install a pulley correctly. The top idler is sticking out way too far.

    Seems likely! These things happen. Good on ya though, says something about a person when they own up to a small error that could have been swept under the rug rather than hide behind blaming something outside themselves.

    you made the right call just getting the OEM pulleys and belt, its hard to say what the hell could be going on with those aftermarket pulleys/belt, this way youll be good to go well over 100k miles no issues

    Is that the tension pulley? I think the Gates replacement pulley is accidentally installed that way by many DIY’rs

    The red circled pulley is an idler, the tension pulley is beneath it. The tension pulley is the Febest with Nachi bearing.

    I was planning on doing the belt as part of my 100k service, but didn’t plan to do the belts. Based on this thread I think I’ll add the pulleys as well. I plan to go OEM since the originals have been problem free, despite the Georgia sand I frequently got into.

    I put the original OEM pulley back on and it lines up a heck of a lot better. I think I def did not install the Gates idler correctly, it was too far forward toward the radiator and the belt wasn’t riding completely on it.

    it’s the top pulley in the pic below.

    I’m actually impressed that the belt lasted 20,000 miles!!!

    Found this pic from when I installed the new Gates pulleys. It seems so obvious now what this pulley was not aligned right with the belt, but I didn’t notice it at the time.

    Yup

    I lost TWO bando belts, however my crank pulley started to seperate which caused mis alignment

    going strong on the gates belt though!

    I am suspect that Bando is the OEM belt maker. The Toyota belt looks different than the Bando. The Toyota belt is also made in the USA though

    Well never mind, the Toyota belt says “Bando” right on it. But it’s definitely different than the normal Bando belt. On the regular Bando belt, the non-rib side is shiny. On the Toyota it’s dull. Definitely very different belts.
