It was a little soupy out at Black Rock today. Thought for sure I was going to have to call for a rescue party.

Damn what a dumbass lol. The playa was a lake. I went to Trego. Jungo was in good condition but as soon as I turned off to the springs it went to shit quick.

He's still out there. A caravan of 4 vehicles made it to him early this morning and they are asking for 4 additional vehicles to assist in the recovery.

I’m having trouble with the coordinates he gave. Is he by Black Rock springs? Like he came down from Soldier Meadows? It looks like it’s going to get into the teens later this week out there. Might want to let it freeze up a bit and try again.

Also “very soft mud” is an understatement. The shit out there is like nothing else known to mankind.

From what I've read he did come down from soldier meadows. The first recovery group was unsuccessful. They are bringing him back to town because he is out of food and putting another group together for a recovery attempt after Christmas.

Even if they wait for it to freeze up he is buried to the frame and all the digging isn't doing much given the consistency of the playa mud.

There are a bunch of people making suggestions on the various fb pages that are out of the area and have clearly never seen the playa in this condition. This isn't going to be an easy recovery and I wouldn't be surprised if it's still out there in March. Pretty crappy situation to be in for the owner.

Yes, he’s just beyond black rock hot south of black rock point.

I’m waiting to see what happens but Ill be back to town Thursday, would consider taking the land cruiser out with the right crew, but wouldnt mind borrowing some extra maxtrax and any winch extensions available. But we’ll see what happens between now and then.

Also another pullpal would be rad

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
That dude done screwed himself good. Hell, I got stuck out there in August (dry surface, mud beneath) many years ago, but not as bad.

I may still have my original WARN 3/8" cable, but it's only got a loop on one end. It could probably be rigged with another loop using cable clamps, but you're still only talking an extra 75-80 feet of reach. Given how deeply he's mired, I think the rule of thumb is GVW x 2 for the pull rating on a winch. So something in the 10k lb. range sounds about right.

If you can get a pull-pall buried somewhere not too far from his rig, a lighter winch would double up with a snatch block. But then it's going to be lots of short pulls and lots of moving the pull-pall. Hrmm.

I wonder if he tried airing down a bit to help with some 'float'.

He has aired down and tried a pull pal and it's just dragging in the mud because it's so soupy out there right now. I think they need to get him up on top of the mud to reduce the suction.

I'd be down to help but I'm not in physical shape to do so and there are more capable rigs than mine heading out after Christmas. At least he got a ride out of there.

I'd be game to go, but I'm not free until Saturday at the soonest.

Seems to be the best plan is a pull-pal near the rig and then 5 more beyond it in a fan pattern to back-tie the master point.

I wonder if a two ARB X-Jacks would be enough to lift his rig enough to break suction and stuff rock in the ruts, just to help with that initial pull to get him moving. I keep thinking in terms similar to USAR cribbing, but use 4x4 sheets of 3/4" ply as the 'feet' for each corner of the crib.

I feel bad for the dude. I know he screwed up and people are going to taunt him, but I'd just like to see him out and on his way home. :/

I know there are a couple people with deuces or 5 tons that go out there and I’ve seen pics of them driving on it when wet. Probably need something big like that with a long winch line and can drag him right out.

    "What could go wrong?"

I know the area well, though. One of the first things i learned is when the playa is so much as *damp*, Stay The Fuck Off. Hell, i've seen rigs get stuck out there in August, just by nosing into some of the more sandy areas. Ugh

I have four xbull traction boards you can use, would consider heading out there with you depending on if my family is still in town or not. Something satisfying about pulling off a challenging recovery like that.

playa is pretty crappy, even if it could find something hard to hook on (several feel down), you'd have mud suction on the vehicle you're trying to recover. You'd literally have to lift the vehicle out of the mud first before being able to get it off. you'd need something like a vehicle raft.

and then that raft would have to be durable enough to be dragged across the mud and potentially small rocks.

That whole situation is a bummer. Tomorrow is my crash anniversary from out there so I feel like I can sympathize with the dude a bit. It’s a bummer thinking about how torn up the playa is gunna get from the recovery attempts and digging.

If any of you guys head out, be safe. And NO VEHICULAR CARTWHEELS :D
