So I recently got my hands on a 2001 Prerunner (automatic and not 4wd) with 170k miles, but I always wanted a 5 speed and 4x4 and this one just came out.. I am considering selling the one I have to a friend who wants it, and try to get my hands on this one, but I don't know how happy ill be with the manual and 4x4 (and extra 2-3 grand ill be spending) if I get rid of mine. Are these "really" hard to find or keep looking for something else? Thanks in advance.

Absolutely no. That is way too much money for any standard cab Tacoma, and that doesn't look that great to me anyways. They just plain aren't worth that much compared to how much vehicle you can buy. If you can sell your prerunner for ~9,000 like you claim, definitely go for that though, that is abolsute top dollar and you'd be silly not to sell IMO

Thanks for the reply, somehow in my area you don't see them quite often and the ones that come available are usually gone quick for 10k+. I know from other members on this forum outside of California that pay much less than what we do here. Thanks for the input though..

I'm in the same boat, some people are really proud of their Tacomas in oregon too. The way I look at it is no matter the mileage you're buying a 15-25 year old truck, in this case a base model truck at that. At $11k that is far from a worthwhile investment.

As a comparison, I'm fairly confident I could find an 05-07 double cab 4x4 or 4runner in great condition with around 150-170k on the clock for that same $11k, while people have their preferences, either one is objectively a better vehicle than a Strippo standard from the early 90's.

I am also a standard cab fan, they are my preference, but I would never want to have more than about 2500-3000 into one, sure I might not have a perfect specimen because of that, but they're not that great for much to begin with.

If I was shopping for something that costs $10 on the other side of the street, that for some reason cost $50 on my side of the street, I'd probably cross the street.

OP, that truck is worth about 7-8k tops. try expanding your search area if you are really looking for a new truck.

The 2.7L with a manual transmission is awesome. You will not be disappointed. As for the price, I wouldn't pay that.

You could fly to a different state, drive it back, and still stay well under $11k for the same truck.

It’s all about where you live.. supply and demand.. if it’s something you really want the extra 2k is worth it

I’d say it’s a little high too. As others have mentioned, expanding your search area could help. A buddy got a 4x4 manual v6 extra cab with 150k miles in central Ca for 9k. Prob still more then other states, but not too bad.

Yea even if that truck was in brand new condition the price is a little high. Even 9k would be on the high end for that. Just look at new car dealers in the southern states so frame rust isnt as much of an issue and also a new car dealer only really puts the nice trade in on the lot for the most part and auctions off the junkiest stuff. Also most dealer have a ton of pictures including the frame

$11,5 for for a standard cab, non TRD 4 cyl?

I mean, it is in really nice condition, but still...

    $8k maybe.

I would honestly consider looking for a pre-runner extracab. Those are a dime a dozen, lol. Even if you "overspend" and spend $2k converting it to 4x4, you'll still pay less than trying to find a 4x4, especially if this is what they're selling for in your area.

Also, no that isn't especially rare, either.

    4 run, 2 don't
    Hard pass.

It'll sit on CL for awhile; if you really want it, just keep an eye out on it.

    Tasteful modifications :)
Sit on it. You’d overpay way too much and the only regret I have with my truck is it being a single cab. Wait for an extended cab or something for a better price.

    Check out these other options

    https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/d/sparks-1997-toyota-tacoma-4cly-4x4/7043618916.html

    https://monterey.craigslist.org/cto/d/carmel-x4-tacoma/7039799465.html

These were the best I could find not sure if you care about manual or auto but as well keep in mind most Tacoma’s in good condition in sf area will be pre-runners because there’s no need for 4wd in sf

thank you guys. that helps, I've been looking for a while and haven't been able to find a single cab 4x4. Im not interested in the v6 or pre 2001 models.. Ideally I would want a step side, but I guess I'm asking for a unicorn according to the guys here lol.. thanks again!

Unless you're really, really against it I'd recommend expanding your search to the older models, the standard cabs get increasingly sparce as the years went on and they sold less. The majority of standard cabs I see are 95-97. I rarely see a 98+. Stepsides in general are impossible to find, I've only ever seen one standard cab but it was a 5 lug. I'm not one to miss an old Toyota driving by or sitting in a lot.

Regular cab in general I'm sure isn't very popular, now factor in that your looking at trucks 16-24 years old and your options are even less.

If you really like this truck it might be worth just biting the bullet and paying. How long have you been looking?

Different subject but I drove 6 hours total in crappy traffic to buy an old Torker bicycle..not very common and they pop up every 6 months or more if that in my area, wasn't ideal traveling but it was what I wanted and I didn't want to play the waiting game again.
