Just an FYI, for those that have actual driveline vibrations, this is just a faulty design in the center support bearing. If changing it, along with the ujoints, doesn't solve the issue then your angles are more than likely off especially for those that have lifts. Also, there is a recall? if you can call it that for some VIN's pertaining to the vibration issue in which they will replace the driveshaft.

ive done the stall test multiple times. The vibe just doesn't kick in the way it does on the highway. Trans shop just rode with me and drove a little. Did some minor stalling.. Not hard enough to bring rpm to 2000

Don't think the pinging is what I'm feeling. Its not pinging when the vibe is goin. Though I do get some pinging occasionally, I just run higher octane when its hot out. Now,, my other truck... Itll ping hard in heat of summer if I aint careful even with Meth injection. Timing is a little hot.. It backs off timing according to air temp.. But.. Its boosted.. Still hard to get away from it. So I don't drive it much in the heat. Honestly, shops just scare me, and its hard to find a good one around here it seems. Everybody can replace parts, but nobody can diagnose problems.. I took it to the same shop that rebuilt my manual trans.. But the older guy who owns the shop, and who built my trans, isn't the guy that did the drive test. I think I just need to Lift it... LOL and see what kinda new issues that causes... But I really do wanna lift it with some Kings.. Just hopin I can get this figured out first

Not trying to bring back the dead, but did any of the posters here that were having the issue (and that WAS NOT the drive line) figure out a solution? I am having the same issues on my truck (Vibration at around 2K RPM) and It bugs me and I need to fix something - It didn't do it before ...

I am wondering if it could be accessory related... like could a bad water pump / steering pump cause enough vibration to be felt through steering wheel and all that? Possibly the Harmonic Balancer??

Just wondering if anyone had a conclusion to this before I start tearing into it.

Thank you much for the link, that's a great checklist for sure!

However, 90% of it pertains to the drive train.. only a few lines of that post deal with a non drive train related vibrations...

"Does the truck vibrate in park or neutral and does the vibration change with accelerator pedal ? This is a misfire test for your engine.. any codes ?"
"When was your last tune up ? primary and secondary ignition are things to look at"
"Does the truck vibrate with the serpentine belt removed ? Maximum of 4 minutes run time . You are only running the engine to check for a vibe"
"Does the truck vibrate cold or hot ?"

out of the things on this list above, the first 2 lines, deal with a misfire, and its not that, I have changed the plugs, and know what a misfire sounds like... and the other thing mentioned about the serpentine belt was my guess mentioned earlier about belt driven accessories being able to create a strong enough vibration, but with out any noise seems odd...

so yeah, just threw out the "Just wondering if anyone had a conclusion to this before I start tearing into it." before I checked the accessories and engine mounts and balancer and what not.., just to maybe give me a hint to what I should check first, try to save some time.

I appreciate your reply, I think I could use most every thing on that page to diagnose ANY car or truck that might have a vibration problem

OK , what are the chances you have access to a lab scope ? Without knowing your mileage and engine size , I would be interested to see how your camshaft chains are doing if 4 liter ?
Camshaft chains are famous for acting up on higher mileage Tacomas causing vibrations such as you are describing .
If you update your user information on the left side of the page with the year of your truck , the engine size and the body type , you will get better answers from the members .

I'm in the same boat. Just had new plugs, boots, rotation, balance and the vibration is still there and irritating as hell.

Its got 215K, on it, but has been kept in very good shape, one owner truck, regular maintenance, highway miles, never off road. It's the 4.0 off-road. I don't have a lab scope but I have a pretty good stethoscope I will try to do some investigating with it.

I suspect that you may be right in your analysis of the camshaft chain, I do believe it has to be something along these lines, if not something belt related...

After doing some preliminary checking, I am getting a 420 Code, which I do know well enough about, but it has me wondering if its possible it could be contributing to this vibration?? I am starting wonder if O2 values could be the cause of so many of these vibrations that people are having that are not drive train related....

I suppose I will start with that, and see what the stethoscope tells me. I WILL be posting some of my process here to hopefully help somebody..

Read my info for my truck info.. have had the vibration when gears under load since I got it. 160k miles when I got it.

As far as I’ve found, people on here go insane trying to figure out what it is.. spending $$$ and ultimately end up with nothing and in that case it can’t really be something detrimental to the truck or drivetrain.

In my search I did find a thread that stated the vibration has no effect on longevity of the truck or parts. Aka it’s a normal factory fault somewhere in the truck and it’s harmless just annoying to some people.

For me.. I just try to see it as a way to truly feel the truck I’m driving. It feels alive and I like it.

Not much answers but hopefully some peace of mind ^

I appreciate the advice & peace of mind..... I will try to do my best to figure it out, but I might end up as one of the people just pulling my hair out.. If it seems to be something internal, harmonics from the cams or something to that effect, I will still try to report the results, but I will probably be in the same boat, just leave it and drive it. I Agree, from what it seems to me, its not a huge problem, just a big annoyance. I am one of those people if I know something is not right, I will NOT STOP, until I figure out why it is happening! I would be happy if I could find some sort of hard evidence / information, so at the least, get some info out to people..

Except that when it starts, and gets worse, and worse and worse,,, you know that it is something that can be addressed.. But nobody has a clue.... and you cant find anything really definitive online, That's when it becomes quite annoying. And people tell you its normal,, or just keep driving it.. when, it didn't do it before.. it just makes you want to sell out, but now its bad enough that you cant sell it without people noticing, and you don't want to be dishonest, and still don't have an answer..

man I wish. Last guy I went to clearly said none of it is normal,, but that im trying to diagnose things that aren't really diagnoseable, and he worked at a dealership for a long time.. And it takes weeks of calling and trying to set up appointments to get with him as he also runs a 24 hour semi wrecker service... Now I think im dealing with some exhaust leaks somewhere as well at Cat issues and knocking sounds.. Went to a muffler shop, and they couldn't tell me anything either.. it was like, hmm, yeah, I hear it.. But I don't know what it is, Youll have to set up an appointment and bring it in for a few days so we can really look at it.. Im just kinda lost, and I go to these places and im just like, alright, I know im not the only person in the world to ever experience this.. People who want to call themselves "mechanics" should know common issues, and what certain noises and feelings are.. I know if I was an experienced mechanic who worked on these things for a living, I would hope I would be able to identify things pretty quick... But, at this point, NOBODY has tried to scope anything either.. its more like they just kinda brush me off and don't wanna mess with it.

Again I’m sure if it was something detrimental to the longevity of the truck, we’d know about it. People taking stethoscopes to their engines trying to figure it out and not much luck so far even when throwing $ at it. If Tacoma World mechanics cant find it, is it really an issue?

That is... if we are all having the same "mystery" issue. Somebody flag down the mystery machine, we got a mystery that needs solved!

Seriously, this can't be that freaking complicated. I believe this is more of a multitude of different problems that can never be lumped into one problem (look at the size of the list in the link for vibes) and for the questions ending with no resolution posted, people often get things fixed and don't post, or they were obvious answers. There's a number of reasons why there hasn't been any good reports of what is going on here, other then it being a complete mystery...

I got no guarantee's here but I am going to do my best to come up with some conclusive results as to why this is happening, whether it be fixable, worth fixing, or complete non-issue ,and I will make SURE to post my findings here so that there can be some progress made on this topic.
