3.4 - 4.0L swap

Hey guys looking to pute the 4.0L in my 97 tacoma that already has the 3.4L. does anyone know if it is possible or know anyone that has done it?

 

That is an interesting question...Not sure why you'd want to other than "why not?"
I know the 3.4 is a proven motor, I don't know enough about the 4.0.
Anything can be done though. Depends on how deep you pockets are. Other things to consider are transmission, computer, etc...

 

Take my advice. it wouldnt be worth it, you wouldnt really notice the power gain. the gas mileage would be horrible, especially if you ever decide to lift or get bigger tires.

Dont do it, the power gain wont be good enough.

If you want substantial gain in power. Do these things:
-Exhaust
-Take your CATS off
-Deckplate Mod
-Use Premium Gas

and if you really want to go all out. SUPER CHARGE

 

hey guys i was just looking around and i guess the other sources were wrong. i was told the 4L makes 280hp which would be a gain of 90 horse but the 4L only makes 236hp... not 280. oh well. i have already done all the things you mentioned but i didnt see any difference with the dec plate mod, exhaust or premium gas... at least not a noticable difference. and in my state i have to have cats otherwise i wount pass DEQ. so i guess my other option is a supercharger but i would be looking at around $2500 for that

 

If you want 4.0L power get a super charger.

 

if you're gonna do a non bolt-in swap, it might as well be a gen III chevy v8. 5.3, 5.7 etc. might be too long though.

 

Hell yes get a nice Lexus V8 in there if youre going to suffer the duration of a swap!

 

Basic exhaust mods and premium gas won't give you any noticeable gain really unless you have a really sensitive butt dyno.

 

$2500 on a supercharger is a lot less money than dropping in a 4.0.

 

I say do it. More displacement, it's out of a Yota, I havent seen it done on here yet, and we can all learn something. Just be very specific on the things you do. And for all that say a 4.0 is no better than a 3.4 on power then by all means please swap a 3.0 v6 into your 3.4 or 4.0 and then talk about power gain.

 

I know it's not plug and play, very specific tuning for the fuel to spark ratio, timing/fuel maps, but it would be nice to see

 

screw having more than one camshaft. Pushrod ftw! Huge displacement from a tiny engine. This is why OHV engines are win.

 

We have two guys up here. One had a 3.4L supercharged, and the other had a stock 4.0L.

I believe the builds of the vehicles were similar, the 4.0L was faster than the 3.4L.

And putting a Supercharger on a 4.0L will utterly ruin the 3.4L no matter what you do to it.

Wrong. You add about 40 hp and 40 torque, and the gas mileage is better on the 4.0 (If you were to drop it in the lighter truck). All the mods you listed will add MAYBE 5-10 wheel horsepower, except the supercharger
