I'm pretty sure that side to side movement is a wheel bearing. If you have up and down movement then it is a ball joint.

I thought the same and went ahead and spent the $200 for a new wheel bearing and hub assembly and it didn’t change a thing :(

Process of elimination, I got rid of all the squeaking and clunking noises on my truck by replacing the sway bar bushings (which were noticeably worn), sway bar end links, lower ball joints and inner/outer tie rods. I did mine the quick but expensive way by doing all at the same time. Noises solved, but you may be smarter and try one at a time.

It sucks because nothing has any visible play anywhere. The only thing I can thing is maybe internal coil over issues. But I’m not even sure how that could make a clunk internally. The top and bottom mounts are solid with no play.

That seems like a lot of play in the wheel! I don't think I could do that to mine if I tried

The passenger side is solid, no play. Driver side has that side to side play. But the steering wheel itself doesn’t have any noticeable play

based on ur last statement - tie rod could be outer or inner.

Do it! I have a 15 tacoma and have literally lived with the noise for 2 years now and a simple zip tire tie did the trick

also there’s a little rubber bushing in there so I lubed it up before pulling the zip tie through to make it easier

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Place your hand on the fender above the wheel opening and push forward and pull back. My fender was loose causing a thump over bumps

I had 2 clunks going on. 1 was fixed by zip tie mod. The other was the front of my hood rattling a little.

Is it a thud/clunk or more of a clack, like two pieces of bar stock smacked together?

Check the foam isolator on your intake tube where it goes through the fender. Mine was giving me cold weather and low rpm vibrations and noise. It felt like it was in the front passenger floor area.

What is this zip tie sorcery ? I’m having the same weird clunk recently and it’s driving me insane not being able to figure it out.

I cleaned mine with brake cleaner and pushed a bunch of clear silicone RTV in the space. The zip tie bound things up a little and transferred too much vibration.

I used a cheap zip tie but as of now I like it, firmed up the steering wheel
