Not really I could care less just trying to show trolls there’s another side maybe worse maybe better. My thing is don’t judge unless you actually have tried it and have experienced it. Which is why I want to share my experiences.

Scott Kilmer said it best with Chrysler products... they're nice looking vehicles, just shit quality. He's totally right. Yeah Rams look like nice trucks with nice features. I'm sure they'd be pretty sweet for 50k miles. After that, who knows...

Toyota has always been about conservative design with emphasis on longevity. Not everyone's cup of tea, but no denying that Toyotas are built better from the ground up.

I am not a fanboy of any company, but has someone actually had a catastrophic engine failure with a 3rd gen Tacoma?

I don’t understand how Toyota’s reliability reputation is really at question right now.

everything that I have read here has been absolutely minor issues, or first world problems.

Diff howl? ...Who cares it’s not even that loud...
power and transmission programming?.... nothing about that stops the car from moving or makes it dangerous to drive.

headunit that abruptly restarts?.... I’ve experienced it and it’s just a minor annoyance.

Fords turbo I4 had some serious design flaws that led to engine failure. Thats not a diss to Ford because they make the most dependable turbo V6 that’s ever been produced. I believe ford had remedied the issues with its turbo I4s at this point though.

compare this to GM aka garbage motors that’s has produced some of the worst vehicles that my family ever owned. Vehicles that had multiple replaced engines.

I seriously don’t see how reliability is an issue between ford and Toyota at this point in time.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
Time to chime in. I grew up on Ford. My dad retired from Ford Credit. I am A plan eligible. That being said, I drive a Tacoma.

Ford has had some ups and downs. Great cars and some awful cars. My first new Ford was an '89 Ranger Xtended cab, I4, 6 foot bed, MT. I ran that thing all over through Michigan winters. The ONLY complaint I had about that truck was the hood. It rusted out from all the impacts it took. I sold it after 11 years and 198,000 miles. Still running. New owners rebuilt the trans. It ran for another 5-6 years before I lost track of it. I replaced it with a 97 Explorer, 5.0L, AWD. It ran well through about 50K miles, when it developed a short on right hand turns. Next, 2003 F150, 5.2. This had some issues. Poor design under the hood; gas rails over the spark plugs, for one, 6 coil packs replaced just outside of warranty, passenger side bed anchor broke at about 60k. My job moved, and I had a 70 mile round trip at reduced wages. Don't get me wrong, I loved my truck, and went pretty much anywhere I wanted in it. And did what I wanted in it. I even pulled a F350 out if axle deep mud. Great truck, just poor design choices. Replaced it with a 2014 Focus, followed by a 2016 Focus. Two mistakes. CVT on a dry clutch. I spent as much time in rental cars as I did my own. How does this relate to the current Ranger?

I spent almost a year researching the Tacoma and Ranger. When Ford announced the transmission and engine package, my decision was made. The CVT, which I hope is not the wave of the future on 4 cylinder engines, is what I had in the Focus mistakes. No MT offered. And the interior looks like every other product Ford makes. And the exterior isn't that impressive. It's had to distinguish it from anything else on the road. And it's a first year product in the US, being built here, not imported from the experienced hands over seas. (And no Raptor option.) Despite the slightly higher price, I think the Tacoma is the better truck at this point in time. That comes from a lifer in the Ford line. When the Ranger is redesigned after the Bronco and Baby Bronco, and if the Raptor makes an appearance, things might change if Toyota doesn't change something up a bit. More creature comforts, a little more cab room, raise the roof line back (I'm a big guy for that cab at 6'6"). For now, I have 32k+ miles of happiness in just over a year. And as of now, I would do it again.

I realize that Toyota designers need to keep vehicle weight down and use plastic injected molded parts to satisfy the bean counters but DAMN our trucks are loaded with plastic parts. It really hit home while I was installing my 2020 headlamps and most recently the front camera controller in the dash. Similar to cardboard box manufacturers (thanks Amazon) the automotive injection molding industry must be booming right now.

The most common problems seen on TW seem to be a leaky third brake light, vibrations when braking, diff howl, smokey exhaust when on steep inclines, and a tranny that can’t make up its mind when in cruise control. I also remember there was a guy who went bombing through a river and had an engine failure and thought it was Toyota’s fault.

Nothing really catastrophic, just annoying, and I think the trucks will be just as reliable as their predecessors and more reliable than the competitors.

In all seriousness... Was there an issue with any of the plastic parts? They switched to plastic for more then just weight, that was just an added bonus as plastic has been put into cars since 1970's. They are easier to work with, hold up better, last longer, more durable, resist damage.... I am not saying they should be used for everything but I have not found an issue with any of the ones I have dealt with.

Here is a cool history about Plastics and cars and the reasoning of using them: Plastics and Cars: A shared History

Um, cruise control? I don’t think that’s a huge issue. The issue is the transmission period. Like I said before mine would flare up to 5000rpm for no reason and wouldn’t downshift or upshift unless you slowed or speed up significantly. It’s one of those things that becomes increasingly annoying and not how a 40,000 dollar truck should operate. Toyota said all there trucks did that and it was a elevation issue.

I haven’t heard of any major i4 issues on the Focus or Mustang. The only issue was on the mustang and that’s because they had the wrong part on it. Since then it’s been fine.

diff howl is the only annoyance I have with my truck, as it’s pretty friggen loud. Toyota definitely dropped the ball on some of the NVH design, but thats a relatively minor issue in the grand scheme of things.

I’d rather deal with a bit of noise than constant part failures.

I, personally, new to Tacoma and a new Tacoma itself... when did you all start to notice this howl? I have just under 3K on mine and have heard nothing so far. I have been nothing but extremely happy with it.
