Rear drums aren't driving the Tacoma cheap. Nissan has had rear discs in the frontier since 2004. It certainly isn't costing them money to sell a truck every time they make one, and they're probably the most reasonably priced truck there is. So rear drums are not the driving factor there...

Agreed. Im just laughing at the idea of tacos being reasonably priced in the first place. They definitely trend towards overpriced in some aspects.

Ahhhh I'm with you now. Got it.

Yeah, i liked the Ford, could get one way cheaper, probably just as reliable. Still paid more for a trd or tacoma.

FYI - You’re somewhat incorrect. While big rigs have air brakes all around, the front brakes on a tractor are piddly in comparison to the brake chambers on the rear axles and trailer. When beaver tailing, there is typically a switch in the cab to allow greater pressure to the front axle brake chambers so that the system operates more like a traditional passenger vehicle.

There are many different applications of airbrakes, including disk style, although those are typically used on coach busses or the front axle on tractor trailers.

They're a bit smaller in the front. Piddly is a stretch. I was speaking in terms of actual pressure applied to each brake because the dude I replied to seemed to think there was some difference in that regard.
Not sure about the beavertail switch. I've never even heard that term. Maybe you mean bobtail which is what we say when running without a trailer. I'll just take your word for it. But I've been driving trucks for the past 20 years and never seen anything of the sort. There is a trolley valve in some tractors that operates only the trailer brakes. Only time I've heard of them being commonly used is by owner operators who are leasing a trailer and just do it to save their tractor brakes.

You are correct. The trailer brake valve, only applies braking air to the trailer. Good for, as you said, O/O’s and for empty trailers that start to whip. My dad owned a diesel repair business for over 40 years, and now my brothers and I own it. Never seen or heard of any type of air proportioning/diverting valve to apply more air to front brakes.

but back to the original topic. Never had any issues with my rear drums.

Sorry, I did in fact mean bob-tail.

The switch i mentioned goes by many different names including bobtail proportioning valve, front axle ratio valve etc. The modern era of abs air brakes may have made that switch obsolete.

Lots the replies here, too many to read so here’s another one.

I tow a similar trailer and my stock brakes work fine, even on long 5+ percent mountain grades. The main thing is make sure your 5000 pound trailer has good electric brakes on it, adjust the controller correctly, and the drum brakes on your truck will do fine.

WA is 60MPH and I have to say, it really depends on the officer here in WA. We were traveling with "flow of traffic" doing about 73 and got pulled over on I-5 after passing 2 other WSP cars earlier that day on same road.

Officer quoted the max speed for towing as 60 MPH, regardless of other road traffic.

Not to mention most trailer tires are rated 55-65mph, with a few to 75mph in certain circumstances.

We had a u-haul being towed, the law (from what was said) does not matter the weight or what is being towed... if you are towing it is 60MPH.

U-haul stated the 6x12 cargo trailer could hold 2,500Lbs and I am pretty sure we had at least that much in it. We were moving truck/car parts from old location to new location and it had two v-8 engines, a transmission, an axle, and other misc parts. We did not weigh it though.
