Coming up on my first 500mi oil change with my 5.29’s.
I know there’s probably copious info buried in this page about it, but it’s many pages!!!! Running the Lucas 85/140 non synthetic now. Stick with that? Or head back to OEM strength? Thoughts?

Thanks for all the great info. I’ve been reading for a while so I’ll cut to the chase. Looking for someone good to do a re-gear in SoCal. Gonna be adding a lot more weight by this summer and will need a re-rear. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

State 48 Overland is amazing! I may have bought his last set on hand a couple weeks ago. Had Sierra Expeditions do the install. Just as awesome to deal with.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!

It averaged out to be about 1mpg so far. I’m assuming it would be less noticeable in warmer weather.

Just hit my 500miles and need to change the diff oil. I’m assuming I need to do the front and the back, not just the back. Should I do 80-140 front and back or something loghter in the front?

What does your break in procedure say to do? Did you have the vehicle in 4wd for those 500 miles?

If you ran 4wd for 500 miles yes. If you live in a climate that has winters you should switch to 75-90 or 80-90 for east of engagement.

    Where do you live?

Generically 75W-90 front, 75W-110 rear. If hot place 75W-140 rear, if Canada 75W-90 rear.

I live in San Diego (Poway area) so summers are in the 80-90s and cool winters. I do travel to the desert occasionally occasionally.

I ran the 4wd during the 500 miles but obviously didn’t run it for 500... does the front oil even need to be replaced during this post gear change oil cycle? The gear installer at 85-140 so I was leaning towards that. I’ve also seen that recommended numerous times on the site. He recommended valvoline 1. I’m just learning here fellas and really appreciate the help.

75W-90 front, 75W-110 rear would be fine, a good synthetic 75W-140 in the rear would work but you probably don't need it plus the extra drag when cold. In really cold places I always worry about 140 getting the pinion bearings lubed on that super cold morning start.

Thinner oil requires more frequent oil changes as it breaks down much faster due to heat. A heavier oil will tolerate heat and break down at a reduced rate.

I run 85-140 front and rear.
