And yes they are overrated. I've had both, wheeled with both in AZ, NJ, PA, IL, never used crawl or the locking diff besides for shits and giggles, as I mentioned in my first post, people wheel in Prerunner's just fine. Crawl control is a sales gimmick and 98% of tacoma owners would do fine without either, not saying they arent great to have but you most certainly don't need them off road.

Not intending to start a sport/off-road war at all. I've already been through just about every thread debate on this forum covering that LOL. I realized that having the sport is no big deal because I saved a TON of money that I would not have saved buying the off-road to begin with. The truck costed 31k brand new, 35k OTD. Even my finance guy said it was ridiculous to get a deal that great on a new Tacoma. Yes, the off-road has some extra gadgets on it, but I don't think the average person like me will ever use or need them. I've driven a car my entire life and i have never been stuck, and I hunt and fished in it. It really is not a big deal. Both are Tacomas.

It sounds like the Sport should be perfectly adequate for your intended use(s) ... stick with what you’ve already got.

The Sport and OR have the exact same price tag if they are equally equipped, or are you saying that the dealer was only willing to bargain on the Sport?

I think the sport was his only left over 19 inventory option, I know my current region stocks very few off-roads.

Gotcha, I misread the Post as it sounded like you were comparing 2 trucks right there at the dealership.

Dude you’re good, I’ve had 11 tacomas, handful of every trim and config, sport will be great! They’re even the preferred trim in the city/burbs, since I moved back home to chi town dealers here stock more sports as they sell better, totally opposite when I was in AZ where OR is the demand. When I went to trade in my OR they were actually a bit upset as they are harder to sell than the Sports here. Off road or sport both capable trucks and both have their place and pros/cons. Enjoy you’re new ride and make it yours. Plus SKEWP!

hey thanks man for all the advice! I have 1200 miles on mine right now and every time I drive it I love it more and more. I’ve been on a YouTube binge watching nothing but TRD sports off-roading, and I realized they are way way more than capable. Really it comes down to the money I saved. I would rather have the extra 5k or so in my pocket. Gonna put new suspension and tires on as soon as I hit like 10k or so miles, and then an air locker. Again thanks to everyone who’s contributed to my decision. I’ll be active on here quite a bit!

honestly I doubt you’ll even need to spend the dough on the locker, I’d replace the crappy all season tires first then suspension, armor, etc and then locker if you feel you need it. Enjoy!

Quite a few things at this point..
You don't necessarily need them off roading, but they're not at all a gimmick... Most off roading comes down to driver skill, and most don't have that and thus makes these features very much not a gimmick

What did people possibly do without crawl control before hand? Yes it’s a gee whiz feature and as you alluded to you can still use it and get stuck, all about driver skill, just reading through threads here you can see how many people don’t use it and have noted it’s gimmickness. Cool feature yes but not a must have by any means.

Look at my build thread, I've taken my sport to a ton on places, even with stock tires and no issues.

If you hadn't already bought the Sport, I would have suggested you get the Off Road, but like everyones mentioning, you will take a hit, but it couldn't hurt to go ask. What have you got to lose?

Myself it was a no brainer to buy an Off Road over a Sport since they are pretty close in price, yet you get much more with the Off Road. Ready out of the box (Except for the crappy Kevlar tires).

I have no idea why some people act like the sport is incapable in any capacity. Crawl control and rear lockers seem to be useful in a very small amount of situations and only with AVID off-roaders who do so regularly. I'm not an off-roader, I just do regular dude stuff. Like I said I've been hunting and fishing out of a 2009 KIA Optima for 7 years, and I have never even been close to stuck anywhere. Never knew what crawl control or a rear locker was until I bought this truck LOL.

I got the Sport for 31k brand new. That was the biggest deciding factor.

Dude welcome to Tacomaworld and the 3rd gen section. Home Depot mall crawler know it alls are the majority. But hey they have that sweet sticker that shows they’re truck is so much more capable when crawling over that grass spot in the parking lot. I just remembered why I try to avoid these threads.

You can put a mechanical locker on for $400. (Check out the Lokka) But the 4x4 Sport is plenty capable without it.

I was agreeing with you for the most part, fyi, was just saying that they still aren't gimmick features as they absolutely do come in handy in certain situations where a driver may not be, it still can be a very helpful feature. Something not being a necessity doesn't make it a gimmick, it just means it's not a necessity.
