You know you will have to hand in your man card if you go auto.

I will gladly do so if i make the swap.. Have been fighting transmission/clutch issues for months now. Getting pretty damn old, especially since when i go forced induction, a stock clutch assembly will no longer cut the mustard. Ive dropped the trans about 7 or 8 times now lol. Losing faith in this old five speed.

I switched to an automatic transmission for medical reasons.

I've installed two performance clutch assemblies now and one stock assembly and both of the aftermarket ones have had nasty vibrations throughout the RPM range. Narrowed it down to being the clutch disc or the pressure plate. Not sure if the latest issues are due to an imbalance during the break-in procedure, but it's exactly the same stuff that was happening with the other performance clutch disc. First clutch disc installed was LCE's Dual comp clutch (rated for 385hp/ft lbs), then i swapped back out to a Luk stock pressure plate (no more vibrations or issues), and then this weekend switched to a SPEC stage 2+ (rated for 401 hp/ft lbs) and am having the vibrations again. Each time when replacing the clutch i resurfaced or replaced the flywheel and changed the TOB and pilot bearing recently as well, but had issues before and after replacing both of these. No clutch chatter when first releasing the clutch, just have vibrations in the 2000-3500 rpm range in different gears. Been a huge pain in my ass. Not sure what it could be anymore

Have you tried just replacing the flywheel?

Yes sir, i have literally gone through everything and narrowed it down to the pressure plate and clutch disc.

Ran a lightweight flywheel originally with the LCE clutch, and pulled everything and replaced it with the OEM one that i had resurfaced.

The only combos that have worked thus far without issues have been the LUK clutch with a lightweight and the stock flywheel. Also changed the TOB again to be sure, went with a Koyo/OEM one. Even replaced the trans bc i thought the bearings were going out. Same thing with the newer trans... It's really starting to eat my lunch. I cant figure out why the hell i cant get things right

Hey Brian, A stock Taco has roughly 31" tires, 5 spd runs appx. 2133 rpm. @ 60 mph. with 4.10 gears. Your "auto". with 33's & 5.29's should be running 2262, only appx. 130 higher than a stock Taco. with a 5 spd. manual. Does yours seem to be really screaming at hwy. spd. or is it still comfortable to drive? You're wheel'in & off rd. I'm just wanting mine to be more comfortable to dr., the dang thing struggles, just to hold it's own on level rds. First sight of upgrade starts shifting. Trading for a 4.0 would be great, but I'm addicted to reg. cab., where the 4.0 isn't available. I'm Thinking about 4.88 with my 31.61" tires = 2179 rpm. @ 60 mph. A 2013 Taco 5 spd. came with 30.46" tires, that is 2171 rpm. Mine will be within 10 rpm of the 5 spd. stock Taco. But I'm scared there is a reason Toyota didn't gear the auto's trans. as low as the MT. Wondering your feelings for hwy. use. Thanks

That makes sense...clutch issues do suck. I put a new one in my '89 Bronco II this summer. Just a little bit 'o work!

This almost happened tome! Had a bum knee, but it has gotten better over time. Adjusting seat distance helped too.

Cool combo...5.29s would be perfect for rock gardens in 4-low with that rig. I bet that makes the auto+4-banger combo wheel with the best of 'em!

    OME 3" lift MK6 wheels 285 Fierce MTs & 4.88s!!
I have a 2.7 with 4-speed auto and 4.88s. It runs about 2800 RPMs at 75 MPH. I live in flat country, so this combo works pretty well. If I wanted 35s, I'd get 5.29s

MKW, what tires are you on now? 2800 @ 75 mph., heck a Taco 4X4, 2.7, 5 spd manual trans. comes with 4.10 gears, & 30.46" tires, they run 2714 @ 75 mph. I've been wanting to go the 4.88 route, but scared I won't get the results I'm looking for. How about driving up here to mid. Tenn. & let me drive yours for an hr. or so, to see what I think. I'll buy you a beer!!
