I've just re-read this thread & mebbe it's my misperception, but I believe there maybe a confusion that rev matching & heel toe are one & the same thing. They are not.

Heal toe is downshift rev matching while braking. I have zero luck in customers trucks doing this, its very hard in Tacoma.

I'm pretty good at double clutching the tacoma to get back into first in parking lots or rolling re-starts.

Heel-toe is awkward with the 3rd gen pedal setup. The gas pedal is too small and offset too far to the right and back. I've contemplated installing a wider aftermarket pedal with some sort of spacer to bring it into a better position, but as others have said it's a bit pointless in a truck. Not going for lap times here! I've mostly settled now for rev-match downshifting after I completed the turn.

That's probably part my fault as I was the one that changed the subject last night sorry if it created any confusion.

[Whether I do or don't] I do my best to minimize wear on my vehicles. What and how much can be done varies by person. Do what you can and don't stress if you can't do what someone else does. Enjoy your truck, that's why you have it.

Clutch accumulator, throttle delay and rev hang make rev match difficult on this truck.

1st gear shenanigans are one of the main reasons I originally bought OVtune. The throttle delay and inconsistency was terrible on the early 3rd gen calibrations (04B10).
As far as Op's question, I always rev match. I was taught to engine brake, not clutch brake.. and ffs don't be coasting and riding those brakes!

I really don't understand this assertion. I have zero issues doing seamless rev-matched downshifts in my truck. I even double-clutch sometimes just for fun and the timing of the rev drop is fine. Other vehicle's I've driven, especially with lighter flywheels, the revs drop too quickly.

Fwiw, and drive it how you want, but racing instructors teach you to use the brakes for braking and not the engine. "The brakes are for braking" drilled into your head lol. Its why heel-toe downshifts are a thing, instead of just rev matching downshifts before turn-in and engine braking. (There are also finer points about vehicle balance)

But like I said, drive it how you want. At street spreds youre not gonna notice

Been rev matching since day 1 on this truck, haven't noticed it being especially challenging. Certainly didn't take much thought.

it’s not quite a heel/toe in these trucks. It’s awkward, but I’ve been working on it. You have to plant your heel slightly left of the brake pedal, brake with the arch of your foot, and use it as a fulcrum point as you roll the outside edge of the toe of your shoe into the throttle. I’ll try to get a video at some point. It’s very easy to stomp the brake by mistake, so I’ve been practicing it in low pressure situations rather than during “spirited” driving or unexpected stops. Pedal placement makes it all but impossible to cover the brake with your toes as you kick the throttle with your heel.

Rev matching without braking I have found to be a no-brainer in the Tacoma, no issues there. Little quicker throttle response would make it better for sure, but it’s not bad as is.

The XTerra that I sold to get my tacoma was insane to drive. Pedal placement was perfect. Heel/toe downshifts almost every time I slowed/stopped, and the VQ was so rewarding to drive hard. That is probably what I miss the most when driving the Tacoma, tbh.

That's because you're driving a 19. Toyota has had a few years to sort out their engine calibration, starting with 04B13 on the 16's and '17's.
My '19 drives much better than my early '16 did.

I get what you're saying, but for street driving I'm using the engine to slow down as much as possible.

Later engine calibrations corrected a lot of the issues. Be happy you didn't experience the early versions. Not bench racing. I had an early 3rd gen and can attest to the weirdness.
