My son just bought a 2014 Tacoma
Do they come from the factory with a TPMS for the spare?

My 2008 had a sensor in the spare, but my 2014 does not.

I guess I was wrong. My 08 had it in the spare. Figured these days it was standard. :notsure:
It's a pain to drop the spare just to check the air pressure when the TPMS light comes on.

Yes the light is on but the 4 tires are correctly inflated. Didn’t drop/check the spare.
Guess a low battery or faulty sensor.
I need to go and have them scanned.

Yes it flashes then stays on.
Don’t recall what the pressure was, but he said it is inflated a little higher.

You may have a dead sensor .
Flashing on startup means the system has an issue..
I’m waiting for mine to start the death wink...

Maybe my memory is bad but I seem to remember reading here that the system can only have 4 sensors registered at a time. I was looking at a second set of tires is why I was wondering. If it can only handle 4 then why would there be one in the spare? I'm 2013 fwiw

TPMS started in the Tacos in 2006 with 5 sensors. Sometime around 2009, they discontinued the sensor in the spare. If you have a 5 sensor truck, you must have 5 working sensors to keep the light off. If you have a later 4 sensor truck, you can only have 4 sensors programmed. If you have a 2nd set of tires with sensors, you either need to buy the stuff to program the truck yourself each time you swap, or go to Discount tire and get them to program your truck for you.

I must be lucky. My 07 still has 5 working sensors. And I do have to air up the spare occasionally to turn the light off. Since I brought it up one of them is sure to die before the end of the week.

Apparently you need 5 for your sensors to function. I was missing a spare on my '14 and the TPMS light was always on. Got a new set of tires and threw an old tire under the bed. Light finally went off.

Yes that’s an option but it places the nice side of the wheel into the elements. It is possible to check and service spare if you position it properly and don’t mind laying on your back with good light to see and feel what you are doing. I replaced the ugly steel wheel spare with matching alloy of other four. Maybe I’m overthinking this

Supposedly, the sensor für the steel spare was different than the alloy wheels, but I had mine removed, and all 5 were the same.

So, then the elements just sit there and fester on top of the nice side of the wheel. I keep my nice spare wheels in the shop and have a powdercoated steel wheel for a spare under the truck.

In my 2011 it only came with 4. Once a tire pressure got to about 26psi the light would come on and after reflating the low tire the light has to be reset it will not go out just by inflating tire. I have not done this in some time but the rest process is something like holding the button in and cycling the key to on and waiting for light to flash the turning key off.

Surprisingly, my unused spare looked pretty good after 11 years of New England weather.
