09 Whining Noise Anyone ?

Well, maybe I'm just being paranoid - I hope so. But I have noticed just a slight bit of a whining noise on my BRAND NEW 09 V6 4x4 DC Auto TRD Sport Longbed. I have less than 500 miles on it so far. It sounds a lot like rear end noise - an issue I had with a Ford F150 (that was never fixed - even after multiple rear end jobs). Although the noise seems very slight at this point, I am concerned.

Anyhow, I have read posts from various sites, including this one, regarding TSB T-SB-0076-08. I'm not even sure it applies the the 4x4 Auto trans since the bulletin does not list any rear end part number fo the 4x4 Auto trans. I have attached a PDF of the bulletin that I found on another site.

I even read that some posts also that state the the noise will more than likely go away as the vehicle breaks in.

Can anyone else comment on this or any similar issues they may have had ?

davatk, I just posted the following thread on 10-27-2008 at 11:32 pm. I haven't been able to find much on this issue until you posted the TSB. Thanks for that. THe serviceman didn't say anything about the TSB so this helps me confirm with the dealership that there is a known problem.

Differential Howling, Transmission Shifting, and 4x4 Shifting Issues
I'm new here but have been following this site since I purchased my '07 TRD Sport used with 11k mi back in March '08. Great information so far! Leaf Spring TSB and other TSB information has been invaluable but couldn't find any threads on the following:

When power is removed from the drive train and vehicle begins to coast or slows down from 65 through 55 mph, a higher pitched howling can be heard coming from the rear end of the truck. Didn't notice too much at first but I have 22k mi on the truck now and can't help but hear the noise. I took it in to the dealership for inspection . . . a new LSD has been ordered and will be replace the existing one tomorrow under warranty. Service tech said it is something mechanical but I didn't get specifics.

I've also noticed the automatic transmission has a shudder or hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear from time to time and have experienced a hard shift and audible clunk when shifting into and out of 4-wheel drive at modest speed (less than 20 mph) and while not applying much power to the drive train (transfer case issue maybe). Due to the issue with the differential, I brought these issues up with the service tech as well and they said they would look into it after the differential was replaced, though he did mentioned that another guy just last week also came in with the same 4x4 shifting complaint.

Has anyone else experienced these issues or have any thoughts or comments? These issues along with the leaf spring issue and I can say I'm a little dissappointed so far. Can't complain about the dealership though . . . new springs and soon to be new LSD so far . . .

 

OMG, thank you so much for that TSB.. When I first got my 08 back in November of 07, I had this whining noise. I took it to the dealer, and they could not find out what was wrong. So it is nice to see a TSB for the problem. Going to head back today and tell them to fix it.

 

that's an old TSB report, they came out a new one back on 09/30/08

i have a 09 trd off-rd, the problem i have i took it off-rd thru a construction just to run the 4x4 drive a bit... it threw my alignment just a little...

Linkfeeny - that was the Rear Suspension TSB that you attached NOT the Rear End TSB.

 

well hell, I tried here, there so many TSB report I feel like I'm in the moving office space..... well you need to submit the TPS report!

Right if you are experiencing the rear end noise. Not right if you are bottoming out your springs.

 

So, just got back from the dealership with the new LSD. Service guy said that TSB I referenced earlier didn't apply to my model . . . that Toyota hadn't included it. He said they sent notice to Toyota regarding the issue with my year, make and model.

So here is another question for someone, what about the warranty on the new LSD? Dealership said it would still fall under the original warranty (5 year 60,000 mile I believe?) . . . does that sound right? By that logic, if I had the differential replaced in year 4 and 11 months or at 59,999 miles, are they telling me if the part went bad the next month (assuming I drove the vehicle off the lot) the brand new part would have no warranty remaining?

 

I would assume they would give you at least whatever their standard "replacement parts warranty" is. I'm not sure what that is.

BTW, did they replace the LSD yet and if so did it seem fo fix your original problem (rear end howling?)

 

Well, I still hear the whining or howling whatever you want to call it. Note that this truck does not yet have even 500 miles on it !

I notice the sound mostly when slowing down, such as coming up to a stop sign, a sharp turn, or a slow flat stretch. Generally when I am either lightly touching the gas, or slightly decelerating.

I hate to take it back to the dealer this early on. It really sounds like a drive train problem (transmission or rear end?), but I hate to go down that road of replacing major stuff on a brand new truck.

Anyhow, would appreciate any comments from those who may have experienced something similar.

I will be taking it to the dealership tomorrow. How long does it take for them to replace the parts..More than a day?

 

I had the rear end whine on my '08 reg cab 2wd automatic ever since I bought it new back in February. I finally took it in last week and they ordered the TSB parts (on their own, I didn't know about the TSB) and installed it on Monday w/2150 miles on the truck.

Mine would whine at 53-57mph if maintaining speed or slightly accelerating. If I let off the gas it would stop. After the TSB it's nice and quiet.

I dropped it off at 8:30am but I'm not sure when it was done because they called the wrong number when they finished. By the time I called at 4:30 it was long since done. The TSB allocates 3.6 hours so they could have it done in half a day if they get right on it.

Did they replace the ENTIRE rear end assembly (axel and all) or just the gears inside ?

Did they also do all the "inside" stuff that the bulletin references - taking out the seats, pulling up the carpet and putting in the sound dampeners ? That kinda scares me , even more than the rear end replacement.

I saw that too. Taking out the seats and putting in some sound deadeners. Why does that scare you more? lol

 

dunno, I guess I just picture some greasy handed dude rubbing his hands all over the seats/carpet and other interior surefaces - popping out various clips and fasteners in the process (never to be found again). I bet it would never be the same - probably big lumps in the floorboard, seats loose/crooked etc.

 

It doesn't appear (on paper and by looking at it) that they replace the entire rear end/axle housing. Just the differential assembly inside the housing.

For sure they installed the silencer pad in mine. It sticks out beyond the carpet in the rear. I can't tell if the silencer sheets are there. I'll have to do a bit more poking around when I install my amp and sub.

I've got a bench seat so there are far fewer clips they have to undo. The cover over the center seat belt retractor and the door sill plates are the only ones I can see. Depending on the dealer, and more importantly the tech, those with center consoles may have reason for concern.

I had a whining at 80mph, they just replaced my differential under warranty. It said TSB-XXXX. Whining is gone now...
