Im glad i didnt get the early engine calibration taco.
Mine drove great right out of the dealership, besides the weird rev hang and throttle response.

    Im still perfecting it, haha!

Certainly, Toyota did no favours for the MT aficionados, re: third gens. DBW throttle gives you a response the computer thinks you should have, NOT what you inputted. Terrible rev hang & throttle lag. A circumsized gas pedal with poor positioning vis a vis the brake pedal. Cramped footwell, etc, etc.....But with everything in life, we adapt, we improvise & overcome. Makes rev matching & heel toe possible if one is motivated. If one doesn't want to RM or HT, no problem. One can still enjoy rowin' them gears. It's no longer about fuel economy or performance, I suppose. AT's have advanced quite far. For me, it is the pure pleasure of stirring the stick!

I dunno? I think I might have you topped. I've been wishing I never posted in this dumpster fire of a thread from the 1st page.

It's a truck. It's not gonna get great mpg no matter what you do. The clutch is going to last only so long no matter what you do, same with the brakes.

Fuck. I need to get a life.

I love my Taco, but even with OVtune it’s the worst throttle response of any manual Toyota I’ve owned. My FJ60 is more responsive. The accelerator on this truck is more like a suggestion than a command. So yeah, I rev match when I can, but the engine response is like picking up a dime off a pool table wearing mittens.

It doesn’t have to be this way though. My old
WRX was FBW throttle and you’d never know. Instant response. And that thing was an ‘06!

I’ve never heard of these terms until recently. I’ve heard double clutching, but that’s about it. I guess I granny shift?? I’ve never messed up a clutch or transmission. What am I missing???

Maybe because you live in a cold climate enviorenment. Where I live I can tell the clutch is not engaging and disengaging fast enough to get the smooth shifts for double clutching. Also throttle seems in consistent for me, sometimes if I try to blip, the RPMs will not increase at all and other times the RPMs shoot up and then I'll need to wait a couple seconds for the engine to slow down to the appropriate RPM for the gear I'll be in.

Double clutching is used with non-synchronized transmissions like in semi-trucks. Synchros are not strong enough to survive the torque those engines produce and thus you must clutch to neutral and clutch to the next gear to properly synchronize a shift.

Seems Toyota has had a lot of tuning issues with these trucks. I suppose I am fortunate that they seemed to have remedied a lot of them with my 2020.

Fair enough. I've had my truck for less than a month, maybe I'll change my tune when the summer and hot weather returns.

It's a relatively pointless technique for modern synchro transmission that can lead to very smooth shifts, and maybe a little less synchro wear. It's really for synchro-less transmissions, especially those with straight cut gears. I do it for fun, and to remind myself I can.

Oh gawd. Get yourself updated. I'm certain someone would loan out their Tactrix. That is how I originally got mine done.

If shipping wasn't stupid expensive to the States of the Northern US, I'd send you mine. :D :canada:

Lots of folks with 2018s note a big improvement with the TSB tune also.
