    5k miles.

    Quit wasting money and oil.

This is 2010 and not 1960.

I skimmed the first few pages... this thread is full of bad info, superstition, ignorance, and general BS. If you want to know about oil and get it an easy to take in format, go read the oil 101 at bobistheoilguy.com because anyone who thinks you should change synthetic every 3K miles is a complete and utter waste of your time. Once you read that you will understand why you should change your oil to synthetic at the first reccomended oil chang, or slightly earlier if you prefer, and use a 0-20 to 5-30 weight synthetic oil and change every 5K at the SOONEST and 5K is usually way too early. You want to know how often to change oil? Get an oil analysis done after 5K once you switched to synthetic and base it on some data instead of superstition or wild assed guestimations.

^ Agree completely. I run Mobil-1 0-20 and a Purolator Pure One filter and change them both at 10K-mile (yes, ten thousand mile) intervals. 90% of my driving is up & down the highway/interstate on my 100-mile daily commute. I've done the same thing with my previous three vehicles. My '87 Mustang 5.0 was not burning any any more oil at 160K miles when I sold it than it did when it was brand new. Same for my '96 Mustang Cobra at 105K when I sold it. Same for my '99 Nissan Altima at 170K and counting (daughter still driving it). I'd bet my house that my Tacoma engine will never suffer an oil-related failure of any kind.

It takes me about a year to put 5000 miles on, so I have it changed every 6 mos.

I changed mine at 500. Plan on doing it again at 1500 and then 5000

I had a 2007 tundra that still had break in shavings at the first 5,000 oil change so i figured i would play it safe

This wasn't true in my case for the first oil change.
I performed my first oil change at 2000 miles with dino oil then switched over to full synthetic at 5000 miles. I plan on changing every 5000 from now on.

The oil that came out during my first oil change looked like I had been panning for silver and struck it rich. Metal shavings galore.

My 2010 2.7L 2WD Taco came with a synthetic blend from the factory. I'm not sure how long the truck sat on the dealer lot before I purchased it (almost 8 weeks ago).

My plan is to change out the factory oil at 2000 miles. I'm going to switch to Mobil1 at that point and a Toyota filter.

I'm going to change it every 5000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

I don't even pretend to know whats best as the info is all over the place, especially in this thread. Also, I'm doing the changes myself as I have trust issues with letting the service department touch my truck :D

Been advised by three Toyota service managers from three different dealers. Every 5000 miles or you as they have said, your just handing us $$$$$$$$$.

I could not agree more. So I have the oil changed every 5k along with a tire rotation and life is grand.

    For what its worth.....

I did my first oil and filter change at 4916 miles. The dealer used Valvoline All Climate 5W-20 oil and a YZZD1 filter.

Between 1,000 and 1,500 I changed my OEM filter & oil and went to a premium filter (TRD or K&N) and Mobile 1.
Yes, the TRD & K&N filters have better filtration IMO. Toyota OEM filters are ok but stay away from cheap oil filters in general.

I am OCD on lubricants and use Mobile 1, Amsoil or Royal Purple ... and a TRD or K&N oil filter ... and I still change my oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles or every 3 - 4 months.

where the hell do you find TRD oil filters? I have looked and some sites said they were discontinued

oh and my personal preference is make the first oil change at 1000 miles with dino...then at 5000 miles make to the change to 5w-30....although i have been tossing around the idea of trying the 0w-30

Did you get free oil changes from the dealer??
I did and I took my truck in with 4500 miles and had them change to Syn.
This 500 miles oil change is non sense.
Never heard and had a new car give any trouble because one did not change oil before 3000 miles... or 5K, as per the new generation...
But if that makes you feel better and you don't mind change it. Go for it!
    Cheers.

500 miles is to get rid of all the crap that came from factory before burns into the metal. No it wont hurt the car immediately but in long run all makes difference.
