Oh... this path is a actually better to ride on than the road... which has no shoulder.

    30a_bike_path.jpg

They actually got it approved by marketing it as a tourist destination.

I will refer you to my previous statement:

"Sure, there are lots of ass hat bike riders out there. Y'know what though? There are far, far more ass hat car drivers out there."

I like to ride. I also like to drive. I also realize that I'm not the only person on the road and I try to ride and drive accordingly. I'm the guy that if you come up on me on a narrow twisty road I'll wave you by if I can see that there's no traffic around the curve or over the hill and you can safely pass. There are definitely different mentalities out there. On the flip side of this, I can't tell you how many times I've been stuck behind an RV or slow driving car in the mountains who refuses to use the turnouts and speeds up for the passing sections. I think a lot of it comes down to how you were raised.

One thing that I've noticed is that anytime you get a group of people doing something together there is frequently a sense of entitlement that seems to come over the group just from being in a group. I've seen this with cyclists, hikers, equestrians, car clubs, 4 wheeling, overlanders, etc. I think it's human nature and, other than not allowing groups, I honestly don't know what the answer is. Historically, trying to ban one user group or another doesn't usually work out very well.

Not a peeve so much as an observation: was sitting in a parking lot waiting for my son to get out of swim practice and noticed the various drivers coming through the parking lot. About 8 out of 10 female drivers turn the steering wheel by putting their hand through the wheel and grabbing the top of the wheel from the underside. Only about 1 out of 10 male drivers did this. Not that it matters much on pavement but any offroader knows that is dangerous. I guess if you hit the curb while cruising around a parking lot you'll find out why you don't put your hand inside the wheel.

One more of my driving peeves, my coworker. His Jeep laid down on him about a year ago so he bought a motorcycle until he could fix it. Well it's been a year and he still hasn't fixed the Jeep and his motorcycle has developed a slick tire. I told him it had too much air in it, he said it's actually underinflated. I said you should put some in it then. He's one of those people you can't tell him anything. It took him 2 years and 30 gallons of antifreeze to replace the radiator in the Jeep. He's 60 something and knows better. And for the record, this is his front tire on his motorcycle. The back one looks fine, it's only got about 3,000 miles on the chopper. He's had a new front tire for over a month but he will not put it on. I do not get his mentality.

He rides about 20 miles each way everyday on the interstate with this. He does come in rain, cold, whatever though.

But they don't learn, that's the thing. I've known people like that and there's usually nothing you can do for them.

A good friend of mine once said, "There are fast learners, there are slow learners, and there are no learners."

Yup I misunderstood. Thanks. I agree, fuel taxes aren't enough, especially when WashDOT also has ferries to run and mountain passes to keep clear. I agree with you totally. The state really screwed itself by relying too heavily on the fuel tax while encouraging people to buy fuel-efficient cars and handing out tax incentives for hybrids and EVs, thus eating their own revenue base.
Drive-by-mile, with you there. It totally punishes rural residents, commuters, and people who drive for a living while leaving urbanites alone. Plus, you're right, if it doesn't have some big-brother privacy-eroding GPS tracker, we'd be taxed on miles driven out-of-state or on non-state-maintained roads.

They need to get their shit in order. It's unacceptable how awful the traffic is, how bad the road surface is in many places, especially Seattle, despite how heavily-funded the state is.

It's that time of year again, I cannot stand seeing lazy and/or stupid people on the road with a car load of snow. Piled high on the roof, over the back window, sometimes even 1/2 covering the front window. Every year there's at least a few stories about a chunk of ice blowing off the roof of someone's car and cracking the windshield of the car behind them.

    Why?

Drivers who slow down... too 5mph or less signal then turn. Forcing you (behind them) to stop.
