Tire mount

Anyone try this?

Got one for Christmas but I haven’t installed it yet. I’m hoping my softopper doesnt interfere. I’ll post some pics in a couple days when I get it mounted

 

I could be wrong but I'd think that the bed sides would be too weak to handle a tire, then again maybe it could help to keep it against the bed if the tire is sitting on the bed.

What's wrong with the under the bed setup?

 

Yeah, the one in the pic on the ad you can see some pretty beef reinforcements.

I certainly wouldn't want to mount one without reinforcing the bed quite a bit...

 

A simple setup like that could be made fairly easily to fit the truck instead of being universal. I'd also rather bolt the wheel to it via the lug holes than have that kind of hold down.

 

You could always bolt it to the rago Fab bed mounts like what you would mount a rotopax too.

Many ways you could do it, but I definitely wouldn't mount it just to the sheet metal as the ad implies you could. WIth the weight of a tire, I'd want some steel structure in there. As @UnderFire said, seems like you could make something pretty easily that would fit better and definitely be stronger.

I whipped this up for my hi-lift in like 20 minutes (ignore my shitty welds).

It's a non structural piece, and I've gotten WAY better since then...

I have been telling myself I need to go back and grind this crap off and do it for reals this time....
